Burning Nest - Nest governance
A number of Nest community members would like to explore ways to improve the governance structure of Nest. This is a space for people to share what they feel works and what doesn't work about how decisions are currently made within the organisation, how the current structure of the organisation helps or hinders this, and for alternative proposals to be presented.
I figure a subgroup might be better than a thread as this topic might be discussed through themes such as 'how are art grants decisions made?', ‘what should the role of the core team be?’ or ‘how do we decide who gets the last biscuit at the community meeting?', but really the shape this group takes is up to the members who are keen to get involved in the discussion.
Using Loomio to explore this might get a bit meta, but lets give it a go.
Add yourself to this group if governance is a passion of yours, or you'd like to keep abreast of how the conversation is developing :)
Notes on code of conduct
I would say it is particularly crucial to avoid finger-pointing when discussing issues of governance and decision-making currently. Nest Humans (i.e. both 'core team' members and other participants) are currently operating within the frameworks available to them, and it would be fair to assume that they are all working hard in doing what they can with the system that’s currently in place.
Or, put more eloquently....
"The person is not the problem, the problem is the problem." (Michael White, Narrative Therapist)
If the conversations in this thread appear 'stuck' in problem-talk, consider asking an inquiring question to help the conversation to flow again.
I have attached some documents from Seeds for Change which give a helpful overview of giving/receiving feedback and active listening (Yes, you can do the latter from behind a keyboard :) ) There are also 2 documents on consensus decision making (a short and a long version) which may also help to shape these conversations.
Please also refer to the Code of Conduct previously written for Nest Facebook communications (see attachments). I will be happy to link to the updated Code of Conduct for Loomio when it is available.
(I clicked 'invite all' but please don't feel like you have to stay in this group if you don't want to!)
