Group privacy and permissions
We had a number of options in setting up this Loomio group, ranging from public listing with purely public discussions all visible to non-members and anyone can join, to fully private and invite-only membership. See this help page for more information.
I initially opted for a semi-public middle ground, of public listing and public discussions visible to non-members (and when you're not logged in), but request-based membership and the option of making some discussions private.
We can discuss any changes to permissions here. Once we've had a chat anyone can start a proposal.

my instinct would be allow people to join without waiting for approval; even if only symbolic that process could impede the fringe series' democratic ethos

Hmm, I thought I could reply to a specific comment with 'thumbs up' (or down) and a subcomment, can't see how now.
Was going to say I agree with you, but want to get a few people on here and see what they think then do a proposal. Partly just to roadtest Loomio :)
Allow new members to join without approval

Our first Loomio-powered outcome! Admittedly it's an outcome about Loomio, but hey we're just warming up here. Membership will now no longer require approval.
Currently anyone can request to join this Loomio group but their request then has to be approved. If we vote in favour of this proposal then we will remove the request/approve process. Then anyone would be able to join instantly.

Leave it open for now, if this becomes problematic then review it then

Despite having set this up in the first place, I agree because our priority right now should be to reduce friciton

@jeromefletcher that's very interesting but I think you need to start a new discussion topic! Please repost there :)
A collection of articles, blogs, etc. to provide a resource for discussions?

Just came across this on FB. http://n0madgallery.weebly.com/about.html
It might be useful to collect as many examples as possible of free, open, alternative art schools/universities, just so that we can get a sense of how much momentum is out there. See also: https://underacademycollege.wordpress.com
and you may have seen this already, but in case you haven’t…http://www.theguardian.com/education/2013/oct/21/alternative-art-schools-threaten-universities

Not sure Loomio is the best place for this, however.

I think this was intended to be a new discussion, rather than a proposal in the privacy settings discussion? Suggest re-posting

What do people think about request-based membership? Would it make more sense to let anyone join without saying why and without having to wait for approval?
Note that you don't have to join to read (public) discussions. Members get extra powers to start discussions and vote on proposals etc....
