TASK 2.1 Mapping QLD's Support Infrastructure for Social Enterprise

DCW Dr. Crystal Williams Public Seen by 43

Thank you for joining Task 2 Capturing Social Enterprise Information and Insights.

The goal of Task 2.1 is to better understand the components that provide the support infrastructure for social enterprise in Queensland. To do this, we want to 'crowd source' an initial picture of what currently exists.

We created the support infrastructure mapping activity based on the attached PDF ‘Elements of a Social Innovation Ecosystem’ compiled by Ingrid Burkett, co-director at the Yunus Centre, Griffith University. We anticipate it will take you approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

We recognise that we may be missing elements or may not have provided enough space in the activity boxes to capture your ideas, insights and knowledge. Please use this thread to expand on the discussion by considering other ecosystem elements you would like included in future exercises. You can also use the thread to pose questions and provide feedback to the team.

We have synthesised the findings so far and attached a progress report on this activity. Please see the live document attached (Activity Progress Report), and feel free to further contribute, comment on and review.

Yes, agreed - on the basic level an 'audit' of sorts has some value - to see what's where and available to whom, and the balance of elements overall. But is has limited strategic value... I had misunderstood the original point but get what you're saying now - this would be a great thing to work on - making the relationships and interchange between these elements explicit. Defo keen to discuss what might be done practically and collaboratively!

These ideas also make me think about the theory of strong and weak ties and ecomap tools used in social work.

yes, social network analysis is the way to map this. There are plenty of validated survey items to support SNA, but then you need the software to produce it. Robyn Keast at Southern Cross (Gold Coast) is your closest SNA expert, I think

@alexhannant2 I'm just stating some research with founders of SEs in VIC to understand what elements of the ecosystem (including relationships) and processes are most important to them (and if this varies according to things such as if they sit in a larger NFP, the nature of their business model, etc). This will inform our approach with the Studio, but we hope it is valuable more broadly. I hope to have preliminary findings by mid-August.

If you haven't already spoken to him, Chad Renando has been mapping the start-up ecosystem as part of a PhD at SQU (I think that't the right university). He has a lot of data

Been away so just picking up on this. Agree that greater application of social capital/SNA will enhance the program.

We recently did a scan of universities and other organisations delivering education and capability building in the fields of social innovation, enterpriser, and entrepreneurship - I have uploaded the headline data from this into the mapping exercise

Thanks PMT - great to be fleshing out these questions in more detail.
This probably comes back to the point made by Melina, but on further thought I wonder if we need a question around policies/regulatory mechanisms that IF put in place, would be helpful to the progression of the sector. However, I know we'll be capturing needs/gaps at a later point. :)

A late addition to my mapping response - Indigenous Infrastructure Investment Fund (IIIF) as funding mechanism: https://probonoaustralia.com.au/news/2019/05/indigeous-impact-investment-fund-to-provide-the-best-of-both-finance-and-social-worlds/
