TASK 2.1 Mapping QLD's Support Infrastructure for Social Enterprise

DCW Dr. Crystal Williams Public Seen by 43

Thank you for joining Task 2 Capturing Social Enterprise Information and Insights.

The goal of Task 2.1 is to better understand the components that provide the support infrastructure for social enterprise in Queensland. To do this, we want to 'crowd source' an initial picture of what currently exists.

We created the support infrastructure mapping activity based on the attached PDF ‘Elements of a Social Innovation Ecosystem’ compiled by Ingrid Burkett, co-director at the Yunus Centre, Griffith University. We anticipate it will take you approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

We recognise that we may be missing elements or may not have provided enough space in the activity boxes to capture your ideas, insights and knowledge. Please use this thread to expand on the discussion by considering other ecosystem elements you would like included in future exercises. You can also use the thread to pose questions and provide feedback to the team.

We have synthesised the findings so far and attached a progress report on this activity. Please see the live document attached (Activity Progress Report), and feel free to further contribute, comment on and review.

Hi, reading the ecosystem document and think there are some missing elements: policy and government support should include/or in its own box "enabling regulation and regulatory regimes" - co-ops are regulated at state level in Queensland are particularly exposed to inconsistent treatment. I also think peak/representative bodies could be included under Networks.

Thanks Melina, we'll tweak the support infrastructure mapping form before it goes live later today to include these points

Hi - I was just wondering if the ecosystem mapping process will include consideration of the relationships between the different elements? I imagine that Ingrid has this more than covered somehow, but the survey and pdf don't really acknowledge the relationships between elements as an important aspect of the ecosystem.

Hi Libby, the first stage won't but we've been thinking about how to do this. The initial focus is to make as much as possible visible, we're then looking to backfill more detail in behind what we have - a second stage could involve contacting all the named actors and asking them to indicate where they have connections to others but some help thinking this through would be great!!!

Hi @libbywardchristie, exposing relationships is a good element for the survey. Are you thinking that it would expose the challenges and barriers? We do encourage Navigators to open sub-group threads on any specific areas they feel need to be examined or discussed. I love everyone's excitement! If you need help in setting up a sub-group for any topic, you can grab our technical expert Jamil's attention by typing @jamilebrahimahomed

Hi Crystal - my comment stems from us trying to get the most out of the 'ecosystem concept/analogy'. The analogy is so useful because it captures the systems-based nature of social innovation/entrepreneurship. It recognises things like the dependency of policy on research/evidence/knowledge generation or the relationship between legal models/forms and appropriate social finance. Alex suggested in another comment to possibly map the relationships at the meso/micro level (i.e. ask those listed who they are connected to) but it may be enough to map the relationships between the elements in Ingrid's PDF at the macro level? Honestly, it is tricky and I'm not sure HOW we can do it, but if we don't we haven't really mapped the ecosystem, we have made a series of (interesting, informative and valuable) lists

Absolutely agree. @jamilebrahimahomed you will be interested in this too.

Yes I agree, thanks @libbywardchristie. I have been looking at this platform you may be familiar with, it's called Kumu. The platform can help organize data and map relationships within an ecosystem. Perhaps after we have collected some data, it will be worth experimenting with Kumu, in terms of answering the question of HOW we can do it.
