Better Healthcare: Review of NZ's Drug Policy

DU Grant Keinzley Public Seen by 243

The Internet Party's drug review policy has been complied by Grant Keinzley, Internet Party Candidate for Taranaki-King Country and Tim Kibblewhite, the South Island Campaign Coordinator.

This document represents the best research available from around the world. The research points to a simple fact; the war on drugs has not worked and a new approach is desirable.

Our policy suggestions and initiatives can be be summarized by a quote from João Goulão, General Director, Service of Intervention on Addictive Behaviour and Dependencies, Portugal. He says;

“Drug addicts are not criminals. They are sick.”

It is with this philosophy in mind that we have prepared this document for the consideration of the Internet Party members.

Thank you and please provide any suggestions or ideas you have here,

  • Grant and Tim.

With all the research we have done over the past month, all the existing drafts studied, and talks with USA legislators in Colorado and Washington, we believe that this document is the absolute best that could be produced for NZ.

Couldn't agree more. Drug use is a public health issue not a criminal issue. Education, support and personal responsibility are key here.

It's time to change the attitude towards this war on drugs, like a war on poverty, society needs to reconsider it's position on the criminality of drug use.

I support treating addiction as a health issue and the reform you propose around decriminalisation of cannabis for medicinal use.
Cannabis for personal use is a future goal that the IP can continue to investigate a good clear goal.

I like it.

in principle I agree, but will need to ensure the encouragement of treatment, as opposed encouraging to take them.

Agreed. I read the entire document and agreed with every point there.

It is extremely well written, the propositions make sense and are backed up with statistics and methods of going about the changes.

Let's get this rolling!!

I have read it through fully, but I can only agree with the issue of removal of presumption of supply (§5.7), as this contravenes the Bill Of Rights Act. The rest doesn't affect me personally so I have no opinion on it at this stage.
