Snack or not to Snack?
We have lots and lots of snacks which lead to people just coming into the shop to buy them and go, without becoming a member, which isn't what a cooperative is about. On monday, there were only 3 of us at the meeting but we thought we should restrict the snacks as
they don't fit on the counter,
the flapjacks contain palm oil,
it's not great to promote snack culture,
crisps might be organic but they're not healthy or nutricious or local?
On the other hand lots of people like them :)
So let's trial the decision tool where we can all have a say?

Restrict the amount of snacks we stock Closed Mon 24 Nov 2014 6:04PM
So we will limit snack bars to 5 packs (including 9bars & trek bars (local) and sesame snaps) but order savoury pastrys from lembas. Next meeting we will decide whether we will order more flapjacks from That Old Chestnut (as 1 of the 5). We'll stop buying crisps until a discussion is had. Consensus must be reached before new snacks are introduced.
As a starting proposal, I propose that we have up to 5 snack bar containers (we must have 10 now?) which only includes simple snacks - eg naked bars, sesame snaps and gluten free snack bars.
What do you think?

obviously I wrote it. I should have also included that before we buy any new snacks we should propose the item to the meeting to see what everyone thinks so we have consensus on new items.

The Counter looks very busy and we already offer such great snacks like the nuts and dried fruit (minus packaging too). Love being able to buy the snack bars as they're so much nicer than what the union has to offer but lets limit it to 5 or 6?

I think the snacks go against the whole concept of the co-op - they're processed with wasteful packaging and are unsustainable. There's alternative snacks and too many people are just coming to buy those bars...

I agree with all that's been said. The packaging is what gets me. There's still no bloody way to wrap the stuff that's even recyclable let alone compostable.

5 sounds like a good number, as has already been said they take up too much room and have too much packaging, the bars like naked etc are already sold in essentials as well. We don't sell many crisps either so I would say they aren't essential

I like the idea of limiting snacks and hence getting people to buy more nuts and seeds and dried fruit. There could be some standard snacks and some changing snacks

I think That old chesnut also make a naked-bar type thing (macadamia and cranberry), could replace the naked bars as an occasional thing. Naked bars are in essentials anyway for people desperate for them!

Other places around uni stock naked bars and 9 bars so don't see the point in competing. But I think things like trek, sesame snacks and flapjacks are good as they're unique I think to the shop!
