Re-invigorating the open apps ecosystem?
I am exploring if the time is more ripe to get this moving again. It seems like some things are converging:
* Valueflows project getting traction (https://github.com/valueflows/valueflows)
* New tech workgroup came out of the Impact Economy summit in BC.
The new workgroup is potentially interesting. Although it came out of a focus on media and fundraising, several people are determined it needs to be out from under any funding umbrella and will have its own identity.
So one way to go is to piggyback on this group to include all other interested developers of software for the next economy or the solidarity economy, or whatever people see as next. But I don't mean it should include just economic software, there is a great need for tools for governance, communication, etc. Anything that a movement or alternative group might need for infrastructure for their work. A broad consortium of projects and developers.
I think it would be really helpful to create a list and eventually a technical architectural diagram of some sort to depict all the pieces of software and how they fit into the picture. Possible data to include (for group discussion):
* Functionality - maybe with some categorization or tagging?
* Software layer - like Ethereum is a different layer than Loomio for example
* What kind of users it supports
* What kind of operability or integration it supports; or could support
* Source software
* Website or contact info
* State of the software: running code, users, etc.; or in development
Information that could be gleaned:
* For a group looking for software, what is available, how ready is it
* For developers, what can we be collaborating on instead of working on the same problem separately
* For developers, where are gaps that should be filled with new software
* For developers looking for funding, where are opportunities for joint funding rather than competing for the same funds
Potential principles (for group discussion):
* Software is open source
* People are interested in collaborating for a greater ecosystem, not promoting their software as a product over others
* ??
Any interest? Any disagreements or further ideas? (I'm going to also send some version of this question to other related discussions, sorry for any cross-posting....)
@ishanshapiro @edwardwest do you all who met in Oakland identify as a network or group of some kind? Are you doing any concrete collaboration among members of the (group, network, or just people who happened to be at the same meeting)?
If we wanted to engage with you all, how would we do that? (Beyond adopting the seal when it's ready.) Would that deliberately blandly named neutral discussion space work? Or someplace else?
[Edit1: I'm assuming that the Alliance for Interoperability of Collaborative Technologies is a call for a broader alliance, to which we might eventually belong?]
[Edit2: This sentence from Collaborative Technology Alliance says "Please join us in our Collaborative Technology Alliance community on Hylo by clicking this link." .
[Edit3: link fixed.]
Thanks for your kind wishes @carolinesmalley and I hope that you and Stephanie, etc. had a great Impact Economy meeting today. Sorry I couldn't make it. I did watch all the videos you linked here, and I love the general ideas and vision! :) I'd really like to follow up on it in a focused discussion space.
Would you say that Cooperative Infrastructure on CM is the best 'commons' for general feedback and questions? Additionally, I'll send you my email address via facebook, in case you'd like to use email.
Wow , I was drawning , and hadn't seen all this activity go by
so happy to see all this inspiring and nurishing motivation
