Number of bedrooms

SD Sophie Davies Public Seen by 273

The number of bedrooms data collected for private occupied dwellings indicates the number of rooms or sleep-outs furnished as bedrooms. It includes caravans that households use as a bedroom.

Number of bedrooms data is very valuable for determining whether households are living in a crowded situation. This data is also useful as an indicator of the size of private dwellings and for examining how the cost of renting relates to the number of bedrooms a dwelling has.

Our current recommendations relating to number of bedrooms

  • We recommend that number of bedrooms be included with no changes in the 2018 Census.

See our preliminary view of 2018 Census content (page 47)for a more detailed discussion on number of bedrooms information.

See 2013 Census information by variable on the number of bedrooms variable.

Number of bedrooms, yes. Number of people per bedroom, also yes? Size of bedroom, yes? If you really want to find out how much overcrowding there is, don't you need to ask those other questions?

At the moment, overcrowding is measured by dividing the number of residents by the number of bedrooms, assuming couples share a room and one room between two children under 10. Bedroom size doesn't really matter since non-master bedrooms in today's new houses aren't much larger than those found in a 1940s state house.

Thanks for your messages @guymarriage and @laydanmortensen. One problem could be that people may not know the answer to how large their bedrooms are. Is there anyway of overcoming this problem? Or are there any ways that information could be collected outside of the Census?
