forum.workers.coop - what is it?

JA John Atherton Public Seen by 189

https://forum.workers.coop is the discussion forum and communication channel for the workers.coop federation members and supporters. It's gradually taken over from this Loomio group as the main place for people to exchange information, ask questions, make announcements, post job openings and so on. We suggest that this Loomio group focuses back on its original purpose of being the place for Worker Co-op Solidarity Fund (Solidfund) members to make decisions, rather than a general forum which this isn't ideal for.

Migrating to forum.workers.coop, and making this group the decision-making forum for for members of Worker Co-op Solidarity Fund (Solidfund) only You have until Tue 29 Jul 2025 1:00PM to participate.

We want to sense check whether now is the time to convert this group to Solidfund only, in which case we invite you to join free at forum.workers.coop, and we will make the change.

At the moment, Solidfund members are a closed subgroup of this one, which means that although you can see Solidfund threads here, you can't participate unless you are a contributing member of the Fund. forum.workers.coop has gradually taken over from this place as the main exchange for both workers.coop members and supporters/the worker co-op curious to talk to each other.

If more than 75% of those responding indicate they think it looks good, or abstain, then the admins of this group will go ahead.

I think Discourse is better for everything apart from voting / polls, but that might not be a reason to stay here since we don't have complex voting requirements? See the Discourse Poll documentation.

Also we could create a SolidFund group on the Discourse forum and have an open category that anyone can read and a private members-only one if we wish.

@Chris Croome (Webarchitects Co-operative)

Does a workers.coop Discourse space already exist?

@nicholasfrealand Yes it is an open Discourse forum you can visit at this URL https://forum.workers.coop/

I'd question why you would have access to SolidFund for non-Members. If you want a say, get involved, pay your dues.

A concern for the previous and current SolidFund supporters who are not worker.coop members

@nathanbrown The forum.workers.coop forum could be configured to have open and closed sections for SolidFund members, I tried to explain this above:

we could create a SolidFund group on the Discourse forum and have an open category that anyone can read and a private members-only one if we wish.

@irenap what exactly is the concern? Could you provide more detail. Sorry I don't understand your point.

Ah, thanks. I use that forum - I just never realised it was Discourse..

@Chris Croome (Webarchitects Co-operative) I understood what you meant, I just don't understand why we would create an SF open category for anyone to read. It would either be meaningless as all meaningful discussions are in the closed section or will devalue membership of SF. "Why pay if I can see all the good bits for free". It would be a major strategic decision in it's own right.
