Behaviour Support and Travel

JE Jason Emmins Public Seen by 27

During this mornings BIS Team Meeting, we discussed charging travel for Behaviour Supports. I am wanting to get some consensus/clarity amongst the team about who is charging travel/who isn't charging travel and if travel charges are being applied, under what circumstances.

To see who is providing transport under Behaviour Support. It would be great to see what circumstances we do/do not charge travel.

no travel charged for any BIS or COS- individual choice. I usually have enough work in each location to ensure I can cover my hourly rate plus any on costs (i.e. travel, accommodation, tax, super etc).

In terms of ethics/values/morals, I believe the hourly figure for Behaviour Support is generous (i.e. BIS Plan/Training and Specialist BIS) and if travel was charged it would take away the face to face hours for the individual resulting in individuals receiving less BIS Supports.

travelling 45 minutes each way - charging 15-25 minutes each way - where there is more than one person in the area the travel cost is shared if visit is the same day.

For me personally, I don't feel right charging for travel given my pay structure. If I was an employer paying an employee mileage under the award I would likely feel differently. I would only consider charging travel if I was supporting a participant who lived over an hour away and who had no other appropriate services locally.

I have one participant that lives quite far from me and I gave them the choice of referring them to another provider as it would take me an hour each way to travel to them (they only want weekend sessions so this session takes up almost half my saturday), or otherwise I would have to charge 30 minutes in addition to my session. They were happy to add 30 minutes travel time to each session.

I will no charge for travel since I can choose which location I am willing to drive to. If I'm referred participants that live far from me - as long as there are a few in that area, I am happy to take the referrals on, otherwise I can just say 'no'

However, if we do not have anyone else that can do it and we would like the keep the referral, and the participant lives an hour or more away, then I feel it is fair to discuss with pwd - as it's not the kms, it is the time spent driving.

I have chosen not to charge travel. I'm happy with that. Participants and their close supporters are really happy with that too.

I don’t charge travel for BIS participants. I feel it takes away from the hours of service and the travel time is not factored into people’s plans generally. I also feel the BIS rate is high enough to cover this. If I were travelling longer distances to see people I would just ensure the meeting was arranged alongside others wherever possible or claim kms as an expense through TCOB or tax.
