Editorial Board Meeting 28th Jan 6pm

The new editorial board will be having its first meeting in the ICC in the City Centre Wednesday at 6pm. We'll be discussing plans the next edition and any other items which come up.

Although only editors get to vote in decisions, all Slaney Street members are welcome to attend and speak and I'd be happy to see a few extra people there.

I'll have to send apologies as I'm not well.

My notes. These weren't proper minutes hopefully if I've missed anything other editors who took notes will make comments:

Slaney Street Editorial Board meeting 28/01/15.

Present: Adam Yosef, Daniel Lindley, Helena Dunnett-Orridge, Zoe Paterson, Aquila, Bob.

Provisional deadline for articles for next edition, Feb 15th.

Big feature of the edition needs to be on the cuts to the council. Two things to focus on can be what's happening to the library because it so well epitomises people's frustrations with the council/privatisations. Also we want an article on the Kerslake Report. Bob and perhaps Jolyon can write something on the library campaign and the demonstration happening next week.

Also, what's happening to children's homes/mental health services in Birmingham.

We also want an article on the graffiti cases at the university, whatever the latest news will be at that point. We can link this into the rise of racism in Europe on general.

An article on Charlie Hebdo, can just be an opinion piece giving a local angle to it. There was a pro Charlie Hebdo demonstration in Birmingham recently.

Someone will cover the EDL demonstration happening on the same day as the library one. Helena says they'll go and Adam will be there to take photos.

Alistair has gone to the Solidarity with Ferguson tour to do an article for that event. Will contact London Black Revs about the controversy of Conservative Party candidate speaking.

Contact Alice Swift about doing an article on Climate Justice in Birmingham and the divestment campaigns, perhaps on a vision of what Birmingham should be like instead.

Left Unity want to do an advert in the next edition, will get this sorted.

We're going to do a call out on the website + Facebook for the vacant space on the editorial board for nominations. Then will run an online election.

Those editors still present decided to propose implementation of previous board's decision on the James Mcash article to other editors for a final decision on the issue.

It is a shame the board has decided to support the decision that James Mcash's article is racist. The decision is to publish then the reason why it is racist and give me a right of reply. Can this be done immediately not in three months time?

Just to clarify Aquila was present but not officially invited as it was clearly a editorial board meeting. He was killing time as he was with me prior to the meeting.

He did suggest he was happy to write for Slaney Street too as a contributor, which was discussed.

Also, I had to leave when the discussions about the 'racist' article began, so didn't contribute to any final decision made on that.

Can I add that the minutes of the conference need to be publicized alongside the election results? Also it would be helpful to have further clarification on the decision regarding the McAsh article. Otherwise good work.
