As I suspected, now that I'm making a conscious effort to research additions to this list, I'm noticing so many women who have been patiently contributing to the commons for decades, for example system administration expert Carla Schroder:

At the Procomuns conference almost half of the featured speakers were women. Last year's Platform Cooperativism conference in New York also had a high number of female speakers. 6 out of the 9 featured on the front page are women. The Conference 2015 in Malmö, Sweden, also features a large number of women speakers.

Shown here speaking at TEDxMasala, here are a couple of women of colour whose connection to our movement isn't obvious until you consider that creating GMOs so you can patent life forms is the food equivalent of the move to proprietary software, and needs to be resisted for the same reasons.

That would be the point of view that most Pirates could sign up to. That and the need to label GMO's so people can make their own choices. With the advent of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing just got a whole lot easier and the IP implications have not been considered.

Audrey Tang is a transgender women from Taiwan, prominent in the Perl community, and a speaker as the O'Reilley Open Source Convention in Amsterdam. As you can see, I've been doing a massive clean-up of this research project:
* I removed the list of talks from the context box of the Gender Balance thread, and put in a link to this one, so we don't get confused about where to add talks.
* I checked through the comments on the Gender Balance thread to make sure all the info posted there has made it into the list here
* I've made a list of ideas of where other talks could be found
* I've added some more talks
* I've tidied up the talks list here, so they follow a standard format as much as possible, and tried to fill in missing information
* I've added the year each talk was given to the listing
* I've added the length of the talk
* I've added the organisations the women work with
* I've added the name of the event or venue the talk was given at

Some of the information I've added is based on educated guesses, and I did all this late at night, so it would be great if you could verify (and fix) the information in each listing, after you watch each talk. I've still got to go through and look for talks that have been added as comments on this thread but aren't on the list yet, I know there's bunch that I've added. Any help with that would be great.

It blew my mind again today that the phrase "open source" was invented by a woman, Christine Peterson, and I never knew that until I started researching talks for this list. This really underscores that gender bias exists, even in the most well-meaning pro-equality activists, and how important it is that we made an attempt to consciously correct it in ourselves.

In response to the advice given in the Gender Balance discussion, I moved all the talks by women who I know are NZ-based into the Aotearoa list. I also added one new entry:

I think it makes sense to start the list with a category of talks from women who are actually part of the Pirate parties (particularly Pirate MPs and MEPs). So far, two out of three of them are from Iceland ;) Would be good to find more from Pirate women from other parts of the world.
