Crowdfunding for the I-80 (Boston/NYC-Sacramento) Caravan?

MW Miles Wilkerson Public Seen by 20

Organizers in the Northeast are trying to set up a Caravan from Boston and NYC to Sacramento. We'd probably leave around June 26th. The main things are that a) we need more drivers and b) we'll probably need funds to get us there.

The question is: should we set up a crowdfund for the caravan? It would help defray the costs for gas.

How hard is it to crowd fund? Don't we need to provide some encouragement for folk East and North?

It can be very hard to crowdfund; but it is also hard for the “Occupy National Gathering” to fund anything; we ourselves are basically crowdfunding.

How about the drop down choices on the AFGJ page. Could there be one for the I-80, or even all the caravans? For instance, if Julia is moving through the SouthWest, she could use money to help influence the water rationing policies that are in place in the States she's moving through. That kind of action could impact California's welcome mat, since Brown has declared a Stage 2 drought, and the reservoirs are drying up faster and faster.

Yes, we are working to get the I-5 and SE caravans on the drop-down menu. Have not had a request from I-80.

Let us know when those drop-down options come up, @sallyg

Sacramento needs a drop-down item for things in general, which, it would be expected that the National group would then approve any actual expenditures, and leftover money would stay with the National.

We also need one, with the same expectations, that the National would approve expenditures, specifically for big items like a roach wagon, for bus transportation, and for some stuff to protect us from potential hot weather.

We are probably going to have a place to camp. If so, it won't be in the two-mile radius of the Capitol, additional expernses will be needed for that.

If its impractical for the National to approve some of these expenditures, then certain persons in Sacramento, not a committee, needs to be authorized to decide how and when to spend the money. LR, @lrroberts would be a good person to make these decisions.

If it gets this complicated (it may have to), we should see that Sacramento is under extreme duress. Things are changing too fast. People have been hurt more than once. Reconciliation may be hard to accomplish.

Sea, the entire fund-rasiing is that “drop-down item”; anything not specifically designated for a special project. Sadly, outside of a small amount left from last year, there has been almost no money donated—certainly there is currently not enough for big expenses. Lisa proposed a budget for park, sound, insurance, etc; it is on this pad: http:natgat2014.titanpad.com/52; the finance group has worked out expenditure priorities on this pad: http:natgat2014.titanpad.com/79; we would like folks to review both of these pads and give approval to our direction on the Wed. call this week, 18 June.

Definitely, I'd like to coordinate a publicized connection with the Climate Marchers if possible and maybe some occupy city hall or similar public comment opportunity to support online component. :-) Please contact me if u need help coordinating this opportunity.

The emergency call from Julia sparked some donations: can we analyze that with thoughts of I-80 (anyone know anything?) and Antiracism Training in mind? Was it our internal folks helping to make it happen, which is good, or did we tap into something outside ourselves, which is better? I may have a proposal for tonight’s call—please don’t miss it; we are very close!
