Next steps post St Hilaire

Hey yall, we had been preparing a lot to meet with BK Bowl and Bowery Presents but it's looking like that meeting probably won't happen before Chris and Joe are both out of NYC.

Broadly speaking, how can we continue movement on all this with these guys gone? I feel like it's on us to keep our presentation + our POV relevant to what the Board is working on. Would be good to gather some thoughts here.

Post St Hilaire!

You guys could definitely continue to develop Rachel Meirs' survey for musicians with Fair Play in mind (and I am happy to contribute to that remotely). KP will you share notes from our Barbes meeting last week?

Will share my feedback from the survey and thoughts on potential SMC use later tonight.

Maybe conference calls if that makes it easier to meet? I know it would make it easier for me.

Hey team, see the below email I just got from Olympia Kazi who is on the Advisory Board. I will be out of town but we should definitely have a presence here. Would be great to devote some time at the meetup tonight to this...

Hi Chris,
In the past few months I had a lot of conversations with musicians and DJs who share the same concerns that you brought up at your testimony at the Nightlife Advisory Board and the Nightlife Listening Tour. It’d be great if you and/or your colleagues from the Sound Mind Collective could come at a gathering that I'm putting together this June to discuss all these matters. I’m happy to talk also on the phone to tell you more about all this. Here are the event details:

SAVE THE DATE

What: NYC Policy Platform Workshop for Independent Musicians and DJs
When: Monday June 10th, 2019, 2:00-4:00pm
Where: Loisaida Inc. 710 E 9th St, New York, NY 10009
Please RSVP to [email protected]

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

We all know the challenges that independent musicians and DJs are facing in NYC. We have an opportunity with the newly established Office of Nightlife and Nightlife Advisory Board to advance some ideas on how local policies and programs could help independent music performers. City-level solutions could take the shape of City Council legislation or City Agency programs that could be leveraged to change conversation at the State level. This is an invitation-only workshop. Our aim is to discuss needs, opportunities and priorities and ultimately draft an Independent Music Performance Policy Platform that could be used to advocate on behalf of independent musicians and DJs at the City level in the short-term and beyond NYC in the future.

Nice, thanks for that. Will be interesting to see what emerges from that. Might find some new allies and/or SMC members! Me and KP can make that meeting-- any others in this working group?

Hey y'all - love the change to Policy Working Group! I'm gonna update our loomio page accordingly.

In the future I think it would be better to discuss as a working group before making changes at the general meetup. I love the change and it makes perfect sense but it did catch me a little off guard to not be involved just fyi.

Yes - I agree. We should have had an internal vote 100% before making any changes. I am glad you like it! Should I update the website? (I’m catching up because I missed some updates front before I was officially added to the lookup group)

Yeah I suppose we should change the website and the mission statement.

Heres a stab at the mission statement - make it better, y'all!

The Policy Working Group is tasked with representing the stance of The Sound Mind Collective as it pertains to New York City policy that affects independent musicians through advocacy, education, and action. We identify problems and develop possible solutions. We maintain open dialogue with the Nightlife Advisory Board and represent SMC as an active member of the Independent Musician & DJ Coalition. At our monthly SMC meetups we update our Collective on any policy developments that might affect our membership.

I took a stab at editing this mission statement. Original version is still posted:

The SMC Policy Working Group is tasked with representing the needs of independent musicians and artists as they pertain to New York City policy through advocacy, education, and action. We develop policy strategies and stances rooted in our commitment to NYC's creative community while maintaining an open dialogue with the Nightlife Advisory Board and the Independent Musician & DJ Coalition. At our monthly SMC meetups we update our Collective on any policy developments that might affect our membership and the broader NYC musician community.
