As a member of Social.coop you are invited to help shape our 2026 Community Contributions: the cooperatives, non-profits, and charities that support Social.coop and a healthy, growing, and resilient fediverse.

The Organizing Circle proposed and approved a budget of 4,000 GBP (5,400 USD). This year the Finance Working Group (FWG) has curated a list of initial nominees under three strategic themes. Members are invited to nominate additional recipients that fall under one of the three strategic themes.

Propose a Nominee

Members can nominate additional cooperatives, non-profits, and charities — or their associated collectives or projects. To propose a nominee, please reply to this thread with:

  • name of the organization or project
  • link
  • brief description and the strategic theme that best represents the nominee: Build, Protect, Grow

Nominations close in 7 days. Members will then be invited to a dot vote across the final nominees, so that all members can share and collectively weigh their priorities.

Build · Infrastructure

Supporting the open-source software & infrastructure we run on. \
Funding projects whose code keeps social.coop and the wider fediverse running.

  • Debian — the universal free operating system our servers run on.
  • git.coop — UK worker co-op WebArchitects, host of the GitLab server we use: git.coop
  • Keycloak — open-source single sign-on that powers new member login: auth.social.coop
  • Loomio — worker co-op supporting our open-source collaborative decision making tool
  • Mastodon — the federated social network and the open-source software our instance runs on: social.coop
  • Matrix — open standard and network for secure, decentralized, real-time communication, used by Tech Working Group
  • MediaWiki — the wiki software (Wikimedia Foundation) behind our documentation home: wiki.social.coop
  • PostgreSQL — the open-source database underpinning our Mastodon instance
  • Zulip — open-source threaded team chat used for organizing within and accross our working groups

Protect · Rights & Safety

Supporting digital rights & safety across the fediverse. \
Funding the organizations that defend an open internet and provide the trust & safety resources that federated spaces require.

  • Electronic Frontier Foundation — US non-profit defending privacy, free expression, and innovation through impact litigation and advocacy
  • European Digital Rights — Brussels-based umbrella of 40+ organizations leading digital-rights policy across the EU
  • Independent Federated Trust & Safety — US non-profit providing moderation tools, training, and shared trust & safety resources for the whole fediverse
  • OpenMedia — Canadian non-profit advancing digital rights — privacy, net neutrality, affordable internet access, and free expression — through community-driven campaigns
  • Open Rights Group — UK digital-rights organization protecting privacy and free speech through campaigns and advocacy
  • Software Freedom Conservancy — US non-profit that serves as the legal and organizational home for free/open-source projects, defending copyleft and software freedom

Grow · Coop & Federated Movements

Supporting the cooperative & fediverse movement. \
Investing in the movement work that grows democratic alternatives to big tech.

  • Bonfire — modular, cooperative-minded federated platform we have been testing as a future option for the co-op
  • Co-op Cloud — ethical, community-owned hosting stack built by worker co-op Autonomic, which we have deployed
  • Fediverse Security Fund — Nivenly Foundation fund supporting security work across open-source and fediverse projects
  • May First — US-based non-profit advancing collective control of technology for local and global movements, offering hosted alternatives to big tech
  • PeerTube — French non-profit Framasoft's federated video platform and efforts to build democratic alternatives to big tech

Loomio - https://www.loomio.com - Open source software cooperative building tools for collaborative decision-making.

We're also going to be asking for support with a marketing/awareness drive shortly.

Andrew Escobar (Andres) · social.coop Finance Working Group

@robertguthrie Hi, Robert. We could include Loomio open source software we use, though any funding (through GitHub?) would be net of our current subscription (499 USD per year). This is similar to our contribution to May First in 2025 (and possibly in 2026).

@Andrew Escobar (Andres) · social.coop Finance Working Group - Sure - it's so helpful to have your subscription - we greatly appreciate it. I raised my hand mostly for the visibility. We're feeling the pinch right now - the best way we could be supported is to join in on our marketing/awareness push soon.

IFTAS needs resources, and is unlikely to attract support from outside the fediverse ecosystem.
