Number of occupants on census night

Number of occupants is used for internal collection and processing purposes. This information helps us make sure we have an accurate count of the New Zealand population and its families and households. Number of occupants on census night is used to ensure that the individual forms completed in a dwelling match the people listed on the dwelling form.

Our current recommendations relating to number of occupants on census night

  • Collecting number of occupants on census night is required by law under the Statistics Act 1975, so must be included in the census.

  • No changes are recommended for number of occupants on census night.
