Proposal for Space Use: Luna Moth Initiative on rolling cabinet in Collaboratory
UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your suggestions and support! Based on initial feedback, I'd like to propose shifting the target location: we'll avoid using the central white round coffee table and instead put the Luna Moths on top of the short rolling filing cabinets in the picture, where currently the paper chopper is (which will have to move elsewhere).
Reasons for avoiding the other tables are mainly to preserve their function as active working surfaces.
I'm launching a new Earthlings.NYC initiative in the next 2 weeks: a Luna Moth enrichment program at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. As part of that, we will be keeping Luna Moths and I will need to train myself as well as volunteers on how to handle them. They are incredible, beautiful native NY insects and I think they would also be a lovely addition to our environment.
I'd like to propose a new use of the small white coffee table that is currently used for puzzle boxes, a finished puzzle, and a snack box: this can be our Luna Moth display table. I've already asked Ben if this could fit inside the existing Earthlings.NYC zone and he already has the entire space mapped out for existing storage requirements and new turtle tanks (please see this thread for more information on our usage of that space: https://www.loomio.com/d/dqeLVIhZ/wild-turtle-rehabilitation-program-ppac-turtle-thursday-2-0-)

What is the decision you need to make?
I'd like to run a pilot of keeping some luna moths here for ~1.5 months, starting in early April and running through May 18, at which point, we can assess if this was a valuable use of this space and whether we want to continue.
Why is this important and what impact does it have?
During this period of time, the table would not be used for storage and (hopefully) instead will become a hub for learning and wonder. I especially want to make sure that @laiquan dubose is OK with this, since I know the EW fellows hang on the couches a lot. Also @David since he often displays his various objects on this table.
What information do people need for context?
The adult luna moth only lives for 5-10 days. While we have an active adult, I'll be learning how to handle them and working with volunteers for our pilot program at the hospital (more information is here, although BE FOREWARNED this slidedeck is currently still under construction as of the time of this loomio posting馃槄 - https://prpr.fyi/lunamothprimer). When we do not have an active adult, we'll leave a little print-out inside the mesh that gives additional information about the program and about the species. I'm still not sure how many moths we'll want to have during this period -- it may depend on the PPAC community's reception, as well!
In addition to not using this table for storage, we will also need to ask that members and guests are careful around the enclosure -- just try not to knock it over especially when there's a live moth inside of it!
This is a very clean organism because it does no feed in its adult form (minimal additional risk of vermin). I may need some help just giving a little moisture to the moths (all they need is a little moisture so they don't dry out).
Allow use of the white collaboratory table for Luna Moth Pilot until May 18

Thanks everyone for your input! The Luna Moth enclosure has been set up! If you'd like to help me care for the creature, please let me know in Slack (I would love to get some extra hands/eyes on it). All I need help with is occasionally adding moisture to the enclosure!

Do PPAC members feel like it's safe, meaningful, and supportive to use the table for this purpose?

I am in favor of luna moths but do not think this table is the right place for it. We have other small accessory tables around the couch that could be used (ie when you walk in, and the one behind the couch) - enriching the use of those, and not taking a central table and conversation space out of service. I personally think this table already gets covered too often in things that make it hard to use because its small. Even the circle table or rising desk would be better imho.

I love your approach to consent to space! It's safe to try and whichever table you think is best for the moths and communicate with the users of the space what to avoid or do with the moths should be fine.

Increases visibility of Earthlings programs and brings more Life into the co-op.

I'm leaning similar to Mike's comment. Based on Jerone's response, it seems like the location is flexible. So I'm consenting on Luna moth initiative in general sense.

I'm in favour of the plan to put it on the paper chopper location. The rising table also sounds good on the side by the scrap paper but may require some guidance on if we can still raise and lower. As proposed I do think it would make that couch more difficult to gather around as folks might feel less comfortable with something tall between them and that needs to be careful about getting knocked. I'm against the circle table because it's good work surface and I've seen folks use.

Given the vote options just objecting for now to discuss location, in favor of the moths coming over!

I moved the paper cutter and am now in favor of moth party! Just don't let them get at my woolens :-P

@Michael Middleton鈥塼hanks for being the first to chime it! So I did absolutely look at the little shelves attached to the couches, but they are not deep enough (the footprint of the enclosure is 16.5" x 16.5" and those shelves are a little less than 12" deep)
That being said, totally happy to consider alternate locations. Maybe we move the paper chopper elsewhere and use this other de-facto storage area that's already next to some other Earthlings friends?
