Weighted voting

Weighted voting means that some votes count more than others. It's the latest feature we've added to Loomio, and I'd love to hear your feedback if it's something you have a need for.

Some example use cases for weighted voting:

  • A housing community gives each property one vote. A member who represents three properties has a vote weight of 3.

  • A worker cooperative grants voting rights after a set period of membership. Newer members receive a vote weight of 0, so they can contribute to the discussion and experience the voting process without their votes affecting the result.

  • A company gives shareholders votes according to their ownership stake. Someone who owns 12.5% of the shares has a vote weight of 12.5.

I like this idea in principle. I guess I've been thinking of a slightly different version of it for several years … I could call it two-level voting, and it's a kind of extension on proxy voting. The way it would work would be that everyone starts off with one vote – you could call it a meta-vote – to vote for how to distribute their trust in the ability of others to vote on the matter in hand. The aggregate of those assignments become the weight given to each eventual vote. Thus, the people that others trust most become the people with most voting weight, and it will naturally change for different matters, as perceived expertise changes. I'm not awarding my meta-votes on which operating system to use to gardeners, nor my meta-votes on when to plant carrots to software engineers. Etc.

@Simon Grant You could experiment with something like that today. Start a dot vote or poll, put all the members in as options and give it the title of: assign your meta vote.

Then take the results of that poll, and enter the vote weights of your members.

@Robert GuthrieThanks! I don't have an application for this at present, but I will bear it in mind.
