Number of rooms

The number of rooms data collected for private occupied dwellings indicates the number of habitable living spaces (eg lounges, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms).). Open-plan areas are counted as if there were walls between the different areas.
Number of rooms provides an indicator of the size of private dwellings and can also be of value for measuring household crowding according to the people- per- room measure that is used internationally.
Our current recommendations relating to number of rooms
- Collecting information on number of rooms is required by law under the Statistics Act 1975 so this information must be collected in the census.
- No changes are recommended for number of rooms.
See our preliminary view of 2018 Census content (page 47) for a more detailed discussion on number of rooms information.
See 2013 Census information by variable on the number of rooms variable.

I'd really like it if there could be more investigation into this category. Can we get a question on size of house? Most people who have bought their own place will have a good idea of that - while those renting may not know, although their landlord will. But we can't really tell how overcrowding is going, unless we know the size of the dwelling that people are crowding into, surely?
