Loomio

Let's pick a new logo!

Nathan Schneider PublicSeen by 43

I created the current three-pines logo super quick just to have something for the site. But @michelekipiel has been working on some better versions to replace it with. This is a thread to agree on a new logo for Social.coop.

Michele Kipiel

Hi @erikmoeller5 and thank you very much for your help. Since our logo is not a registered trademark, I believe it makes sense to follow your advice and release it under a BY-NC-SA 3.0 lices as originally proposed.

I'll start a poll ASAP so we can vote on this and have the logo on our front page in no time :)

Do you agree to release our logo under a CC BY-NC-SA licence? (see https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/ for reference)

Agree

If that works for you and @nev I'm happy with it. With the clarification that the Social.coop collective itself can use it for commercial purposes (eg. t-shirts sales feeding into our shared budget)

You really need to look more broadly into Trademark Law before making a decision on this, especially on an international context. Ramifications can be vast and wild.

I didn't engage in the discussion, but enjoyed watching it unfold. I'm happy with the reasoning for this.

Did the individual who created the logo assign it to us for further licensing?

Mayel de Borniol

@horatiotrobinson I understand your point (I have some experience with trademarks, though definitely not a lawyer either!) but since we are not a legal entity and we have not yet even considered trademarking the name "social.coop", that vote is just about assigning a copywriting
to the creative work (the logo image) so we can use all feel comfortable using it for it's intended purposes

Nathan Schneider

@thomasbeckett perhaps we should consider a stipend for the artists to compensate them for this contribution.

Hi all,

as this vote is causing a big deal of controversy and confusion (and I am among those confused), I propose we cancel it for the time being and not consider it binding.

Feel free to comment below,
Thanks!

Hi @michelekipiel - there clearly isn't a consensus on this (and a lot of confusion as you say).

I would recommend letting it run - and then in the outcome state that it didn't meet our standards for a binding resolution (I believe there are enough blocks).

This is the second proposal on social.coop go this route (the other being @fabianhjr proposal re: CoC). The main reason in my view - that the necessary conversation/interrogation didn't take place.

The best practice of setting the context for a proposal and eliciting a conversation might lead to a clearer proposal in the end.

Having said that - this proposal (and all non-binding proposals) can really bring issues to a head, highlight issues that people have, and drive the conversation forward. They certainly get people engaged!! :)

Sorry for the absence, I've been packing for the best part of the last couple days :)
While packing, though, I had an idea: what if we release the picture itself with a BY-NC-SA licence and use it as our logo WITHOUT explicitly stating it is a logo? Would that save us from all the trademark shackles?

Just thinking aloud here, so please be kind :)

Fabián Heredia Montiel

@michelekipiel I would be more inclined to go the route @horatiotrobinson proposed. Using it without releasing it in a specific license. It would be the option that leaves the most doors open as far as a trademark is concerned.

Michele Kipiel

Works for me. If @nev agrees as well, I have no problems with declaring the logo image public domain (ie. no licence) and start using it.

@h

"Public Domain" doesn't mean "no licence". Public Domain, legally speaking, means that you're giving up any and all rights on a certain work. As long as you release it without including any legal statements, you're probably safer than attaching any legally meaningful descriptions to it. (potentially with legal meanings that aren't what you intended, despite your best intentions). Using legal speak incorrectly is a minefield. Mistakes happen.
Again, "Public Domain" waivers only apply in the sense of Copyright. Trademarks are something else entirely.
Sorry to be a pest, licencing of works is really an area where specialised knowledge is required.

Michele Kipiel

Then "no licence" it is, I have no problem with that. Thanks for being a pest! :)

Neville Park

I'm fine with no licence!

Michele Kipiel

Brilliant!

@mayel do you prefer a PNG version of the logo, or an SVG one for the landing page?

Also, I'll export two favicons: 16 and 32px each, so we are covered for both normal and retina screens (unless there's a way to only use the 32px one everywhere).

If any of you wishes to use the logo somewhere else, feel free to, just please use this thread to list all places where the logo is, so we all know.

Thank you all!

Michele Kipiel

Will have that ready this evening! :) Also, let me know if you need the font file to use as webfont

Mayel de Borniol

Cool. Web foot too please! Should we use it for other things as well? Headings?

Michele Kipiel

Let's begin with just using it to write social.coop on the landing page. I'd rather not replace all the headings in the page as most of those refer to mastodon-wide features and I feel it would be confusing (and unfair) to make them look as if they were exclusive to social.coop.

Nathan Schneider

I just updated the logo on Open Collective.

Nathan Schneider

@michelekipiel Could you add the high-res versions of the logo to the wiki? It'd be good to have them somewhere.

Michele Kipiel

errr.. as soon as the wiki comes back from the dead :D
