Loomio

Live meetings (i.e. offline get-togethers)

My initial instinct before going for Loomio, was to organise a regular pub meet for interested parties for ongoing organisation of these events, probably as often as weekly because it's not long before 20th Nov.

This idea is really what led to adopting Loomio, as Maddie Broad had already raised the question of how we communicate / coordinate in an email. I felt that live meetings might lead to what Ben Knight called an "accidental dictatorship". That said, there's nothing to stop us still having such things. In fact they might prove invaluable to build trust and so forth.

So any discussion of where / when to meet we can start here (e.g. evenings/daytime, pub/non-pub) and any current arrangements I will put in an update to this top context so it's easy to find.

I'd be well up for a weekly meeting, in a pub is fine by me, and could be daytime or evening... Pretty open really. I think 'real' meetups are extremely valuable. Loomio alone will not be enough.

Evening would definitely be the most practical for me, and meetings irl for the win

I can do evenings, in either Falmouth or Penryn or even elsewhere (e.g. Redruth) if people would like that? Tuesday nights are v.bad for me, Thursdays also bad but less so...

I could tie my visits to Falmouth to meetings if they are on a regular evening.

@jeromefletcher great do you have a preference? Perhaps you'd like to start a specific proposal in this discussion (e.g. for day / time / loc ) as you have the least time down here...

I should also add that we are primarily talking about the 3-day AntiUni festival in November, rather than plans for a persistent entity / alternative art school / research guild etc... but clearly there's some overlap between these interests.

Hallo, Because of being involved in a related project for a Live Art Development Agency DIY project called University of DIY (November 2015, Contact Theatre, Manchester), I am interested in joining discussion about this. Given the proximity to an official Uni Campus, it Probably is important to be careful to put the accent on the positive and that the term AntiUniversity is not to be perceived as an anti-student or anti-academic lobby. Positive and alternatives and ways of sharing knowledge and research beyond the bastions is becoming increasingly important...

Welcome @simonpersighetti (and @fredmcvittie ), great to have you here! Yes I sympathise, the oppositional tone is somewhat unfortunate. We inherited that from the atmosphere in '67/'68 and their choice of name 'the Anti-University'. Use of this terminology now is temporary, in wanting to draw a connection between this event in November and a historical series of events in 1968. Beyond the festival weekend, talking about 'independent', 'DIY' or 'Guilds', 'Associations' and so forth offer us more positive alternative terms, such as with your project in Manchester.

Hi. I'm also involved in the University of DIY event in Manchester (although less so than Simon), and would welcome any move to stress the positives presented by non-institutional educational projects. Some of us might feel that the direction of many universities in the UK right now is indeed counter to the spirit of an open pursuit of knowledge in all its forms, but there's still a lot of good stuff going on in them, and indeed a lot of good people trying to maintain high principles.

Also, because I have no life, regular meetings in a pub would be great. I particularly like the Redruth option, since that's local :)

Hay, I understand the dictatorship point. Perhaps the key would be to take minuets and relay this on loomio. For me it would be useful to have a physical meet up to discuss ideas I have for this event to help develop them further. Any major decisions I think should be kept online. I am restricted to Penryn and Falmouth inless lifts are offered. I would really like to meet up this Sunday the 11th of October, evening, in Penryn at the Thirsty Scholar, around 7pmish.
