How do we get senior managers to make good decisions whilst they are panicking?

There are weak correlations of proposed TEF indicators with teaching excellence. Multiple confounding variables. TEF measurements can be improved OR teaching and learning can be improved, These are not the same activities.

Is there a metric that measures teaching excellence? Is there a group of metrics that we could add to improve the processes. [we felt not, but we want to look for some]

We want to influence the development of the TEF, so first of all it measures teaching excellence, and secondly can be used as a tool to support, nurture and spread excellent teaching practice.

Should be designed in such a way as to minimize gaming? Should we maximise gaming as to minimise negative effects? So, therefore, should we design metrics that are helpful and allow tools to be developed that support teaching quality enhancement.

I like the idea of appropriating the TEF not being pushed around by it.

I have academic qualms one the TEF - will it improve processes - not sure. Isn't it all just about government funding and not about excellence?

Owning the TEF and not interpreting it to what the management teams want to report on is important - we have a drive for HEA Fellowships - it could so easily be a management driven system (reported upwards) rather than reflecting teaching practice.

The three common metrics as currently defined (employment/destination, retention/continuation, NSS) will provide a mixed picture of teaching quality, with many RusGrp scoring high on e/d by virtue of current reputation but poor on NSS. Needs more.
