Dyer’s Woad (Isatis tinctoria)

NBJ Nickie Bartlett / Jakeman Public Seen by 108

Quick question...has anybody got experience of growing Dyer’s Woad. I’ve grown some seeds, but wondered how vigorous it will be. I’ve heard that in some places it can be quite invasive, but not sure if the applies to the UK. Any info gratefully received.

There's some interesting stuff about dying with woad on craft dyers 'The Outside' blog. 'The Outside' natural dyers are based local-ish to both myself and Antony. 🌿 https://www.theoutside.org.uk/?s=woad

Thanks Anthony...Good tip. Germination hasn’t been an issue. Lucky enough to have a greenhouse and to be honest I’ve got more woad than I can handle! Looking forward to having a go at dying which looks to be an interesting process!

Good luck! I had difficulty getting germination. Remember it is biannual, and for dyeing you need the first year leaves, but if you want seed you need it to flower year 2 (doh!)
