Announcing AGM date 2020; & feed in to shape the event

HGP Hannah Gardiner (Current profile) Public Seen by 117

The NFGS directors have reviewed our ways of working in the last few months in light of the lockdown measures and concluded that we wish to run the AGM as a virtual event this year. This will be held on Saturday 26th September in rhythm with the traditional end of the harvest season in the UK.

We will hold this as a 3 part meeting in the afternoon,

1. Introductions and what we have been doing and what is on our minds (30-45 mins)

2. The formal business of the AGM (for about an hour)

3. Break for tea/coffee (15 mins) A chat room could be set up for these that wish.

4. A seminar on topic to be decided (1 hours).

5. Next steps for NFGS; shaping a strategy to 2022 (30 min)

We are looking at what kind of topics might be good to cover in the session, or consider for further action next year.

We have posed a couple of questions below, please vote on suggestions if they are relevant to you and/or add additional options. We also invite you to add comments/thoughts into the thread.

If anyone would like to be involved in some way in organising the AGM, please get in touch!

Look forward to seeing/hearing all your thoughts

What a strange year, still in partial lockdown but lots to fit in after Mid-summer!

Could we be almost ready to agree a date for this year's AGM, Directors provisionally agreed 2nd October as the end of September looked too busy. Could this be OK for you?

Assuming no further wave of infections/variants - a real meeting or 'hybrid' event, that could be people meeting in Birmingham's Martineau gardens (others joining in by Zoom)

Note for Calendar/Diary: Zoom conference & AGM Saturday 26th September, 10.30am-1.30pm. We'll consider Forest Gardening and green 'Social Prescribing', explore how to 'Enhance Well-being by Gardening with Nature: Build resilience in times of crisis' & shape up our Scheme's and CIC's way forward. Programme is being finalised. Flier with details is soon to be shared.

Hello all you may have seen the note just sent out about your responses to the question: who should we collaborate with? Let me say generally a big thank you to all who answered any or all of the questions. It's a great steer to our thinking. We met as a board yesterday and have the following proposal to make for the AGM. We believe we could theme this year's meeting (online 26th September) on 'well being' and 'skill-building'.

Here's the thinking: at the Oxford Real Farming Conference we had signals from people like Henry Dimbleby (leading the writing of our National Food Strategy) that community level agroforestry could be included in the Strategy. We've had only silence from his team since this positive encouragement in January despite many attempts, even before the pandemic, to follow up. At the same time we recognise we are a very small organisation in a field of many active and well funded groups working on food security. Some recent good news stories from the health and well being context suggest we might better focus our efforts here. Which is not to say food isn't an integral part of well-being, just that we may have more to say here.

We don't have all the evidence we need to differentiate forest garden projects from other forms of growing in terms of impact, but we do know that what does differentiate forest gardening is a mindset that sets us alongside, as part of nature, not above it. It is therefore how people are introduced to forest gardening, through the forest gardener that makes the difference. Therefore if we can tell more positive stories about well-being and at the same time share knowledge about what it takes to build a confident practice as a forest gardener, we make it more likely we will have the supply of trained forest gardeners to plant forest gardens for, and in, a well being context. We hope you agree.

Forgot to say...I’m happy to work with the NHS if that get’s voted for. (I meant to vote for the NHS but the voting IT got the better of me) I’m better at talking to people than working out websites on my phone!!

It was good to discuss possible collaborations within this event regarding the climate emergency and Park's potential...
