Supporting The Real Junk Food Project http://therealjunkfoodproject.co.uk/
As you might know, the Real Junk Food Project in Armley are having some financial difficulties at the moment. They are in the position of having to raise money to buy their cafe and save themselves from eviction.
I put this thread up because I know a few of you had expressed interest in setting something up to support them. I wont be able to be instrumental in running anything because I have to concentrate on the campaigns TRJFP is running, but I can certainly help out if anyone wanted to get something going!
I know it would mean a huge amount to everyone at the project and we need all the help we can get!

Sell TRJFP food at lunchtime on campus once a week to raise money Closed Mon 24 Nov 2014 8:04PM
I spoke to Conor about us potentially selling TRJFP food outside the union once a week (on a pay as you feel basis) and giving the money to them. He said it would be fine but we would need to pick the food up ourselves so we'd need a car. If someone has a car they'd be willing to use and if people are happy and willing to volunteer I;ll start looking into setting it up!

Definitely. I can cook and collect and put time into this (over other things). We would just need a clear message and explanation of the greatness of TRJFP so people give generously and don't just take free food :)

having a TRJFP presence on campus would be good for their exposure and potentially get more students thinking about waste

Monday's are too competitive with other stalls and Thursday is busy for Green Action Coop so a Tuesday or Wednesday might be best. I don't have a car but I can drive. I believe the cornerstone housing coop have a car that is insured for any driver so if noone has a car we could ask luke about using that.

Giving the donation money sounds lovely, if everybody is happy with it going to this cause.
And I'm very happy to help out with a stall, I think that sounds like a good idea. We'll be raising money but also spreading the word about what TRJFP is doing and making people aware of the food waste problem.
Also agree that we should avoid Mondays and Thursdays. Can we potentially do Wed? We'll need to set this up soon to get something going before everyone leaves for xmas

I really like the stall idea and agree with Annemarie about making sure TRJFP message gets across to people who stop by. Might not be possible, but it would be good if there was a better way to get the produce across rather than having to make a special trip. Even better would be to intercept our own food from nearby, like from the union, Bakery 164, Tesco express etc., but that would be a bit cheeky and I'm not sure we'd get away with it!

They can't bring it to us though and I don't have time to be intercepting and cooking food but Patrick if you can go for it! Wednesday afternoons are usually quiet as that's when sports teams have their training etc - how about Tuesday?
Patrick Sat 22 Nov 2014 8:34PM
I will give intercepting food some thought. I'm not sure whether local outlets would be at all keen on their waste food being distributed by us so close by though! Tuesday sounds like a good day, at the least I'm happy to do a shift on the stall. :)

I agree with Bryher on this. I went to TRJFP on Saturday for the first time to volunteer and chat with Adam, and was very inspired by what they're doing. It ticks all the boxes, saves on food wastage, feeds those in need, brings the local community together in a positive way... amazing place!!
At the financial meeting we agreed to sort out some of the loose change in donations that's been loitering around co-op which I propose we give to them. From random coins in tupperware and donations for the vegan cafe that never happened (I think?) we have about £50. Not a lot but it's a start, I think it would be great if we could work together and give them some kind of ongoing support.
