Promoting AND organising more inclusive democracy

BB Bob Bollen Public Seen by 45

I want our group to be both promoting new forms of inclusive decision making AND organising and supporting democratic practice right now.

This latter one is where my skills and experience as a project manager lie and I want to use these for the movement; and it chimes with my beliefs in the importance of learning by doing and that successful experiments bring hope and growth.

I believe that these two strands of promoting and organising are complementary and we need them both.

What do you think?

PS we shouldn't be afraid of dreaming big - Compass is a large network of people, many with relevant skills and time to offer.

I don't have a problem with this proposition. The question for me is the extent and scope that we can do something like this given our resources, that, putting aside skills, are basically time plus money. I think we can and ought to solve as many Compass members as we can in one way or another, and likewise others. Its also about learning and we are doing, and perhaps we need to develop this as a step by sep process. The old Community Development maxim is don't set up people to fail, but always challenge, and you learn through steps.

a good word of warning, Colin "don't set people up to fail" - thank you.

One of the things Bob has suggested was empanelling a jury from members of Compass that would be both representative and random, and which could be asked to decide which proposal(s) should go forward among the many we hope to come up with. This would show whether or not the idea of a random jury making important decisions was workable. I'd support it!

This is certainly rather more manageagble and worth exploring a bit more.

I like the suggestion of organising some sort of jury of Compass members as this offer another way that people might want to get involved. but it will require a bit of thought and a coup,e of people who are willing to devote their time to organising and managing it. We will also need some more detailed ideas on how we are to make this work. However I would see the Compass Jury as sitting alongside my suggestion of a structured process for our group, Getting information and evidence in stages, starting at the level of the individual and neighbourhood and working 'up'. Ideas on how this might fit with the Compass Jury idea would be very welcome.

I agree with Colin.
