That TVNZ follow due process and allow a proper timeframe for a "conversation" on outsourcing of Maori and Pasifika programming.

New timeframe: March 2015

Pacific media groups are calling on TVNZ to extend to March 2015, including through an online petition.

That new date will allow Pasifika communities more time to organise responses. These responses include issues of community ownership for the programmes, as well as answering calls for a long-sought after Pasifika TV channel.

The petition reads:

"National broadcaster TVNZ is "outsourcing" production for Maori and Pacific Islands programmes. Signatures call for TVNZ to change outsourcing to March 2015. This will enable Pasifika communities to better prepare, plan and implement change."

The petition is being led by the Pacific Islands Film and Television group and the Pacific Freedom Forum, following a fono held with the support of the Pacific Islands Media Association.

TVNZ's promise of a "conversation" about outsourcing needs to extend to an informed "consultation" - and that cannot happen under current timeframes.

There are no reasons why the time frames could not be extended.
