Welcoming discussion on our Trust objectives

MA Mark Amery Public Seen by 427

We have developed draft objectives for the trust drawn from February and June community hui. We’re interested in any feedback on this kaupapa by Saturday 15 July. There will then be an opportunity to vote on it via our online platform Loomio by Thursday 20 July.
The objectives are the general purpose of the trust and need to be broad and permissible for our activity. In consultation with the community through Loomio and hui, the trustees will then determine how the objectives will be met and who will benefit from the trust’s work.

Draft objectives for the PHT

  1. To help ensure a strong, diverse and connected community by assisting those people in need to access affordable and appropriate housing in Paekākāriki.

  2. To recognise mana whenua’s special connection to this land.

  3. To ensure beneficiaries of the trust include the elderly, residents with changed circumstances, residents on lower incomes and Ngāti Haumia.

The proposed objectives seem appropriate as broad guiding principles.
I wonder if the wording of #3 ought to be tweaked a little though - (1) it may well be impractical to 'ensure' beneficiaries come from these particular groups - probably better worded as 'giving priority' or 'special consideration' to certain groups or categories of people most in need, 'including the elderly, etc etc; ,and (2) there may be other categories worthy of special consideration (?families, ?single people), and these may also change over time, so I would suggest whatever wording is adopted not be too specific - perhaps including a requirement for criteria to be reviewed from time to time.

Thanks Maria we thought 'include' here as a word that does exactly that

Ah but now I see your point @mariastubbe - what about: To ensure the elderly, residents with changed circumstances, residents on lower incomes and Ngāti Haumia are given consideration as beneficiaries of the trust.
Thoughts?

The objectives are targeted towards those residents and tangata whenua most in need, but in a broadly inclusive way.

I agree with Maria, I think if you mean these groups should be prioritised, then I think you should say that. saying they get consideration means nothing - everyone will get consideration after all - I assume applications will all be considered?

Finalising trust objectives Closed Mon 21 Aug 2017 8:03AM

Kia ora, after receiving people's feedback and discussion amongst the working group we're proposing remiving objective 3: "To ensure the elderly, residents with changed circumstances, residents on lower incomes and Ngāti Haumia are given consideration as beneficiaries of the trust."
It has proven too problemmatic! So we are asking you to once again to vote to approve our objectives just as the following:
1. To help ensure a strong, diverse and connected community by assisting those people in need to access affordable and appropriate housing in Paekākāriki.
2. To recognise mana whenua’s special connection to this land.

Thanks!
