Demonstration proposal Closed Tue 4 Apr 2017 7:00PM

This is a proposal, where you can make a decision together. You can start a proposal once a discussion is underway.

Everyone is asked to state a position by the deadline. You can extend the deadline if you need to, or close a proposal early.

You can change your position while the proposal is open. You might reconsider your view as you listen to others.

Sometimes groups work through a series of proposals to build solutions together. You can raise sequential proposals in this thread.

Here's the message I wrote for getting people onto Loomio quickly. Feel free to copy it verbatim to help a new user get on the group.

  • Short version (TL;DR): _____________________________ Do these things today:
  1. Be sure to have your student email set up on your phone (you can just add it to your "Gmail" app).

  2. On your smartphone, tap this link: https://www.loomio.org/join/group/f826c6fd41a26aaeea52/

  3. Sign in to Loomio by email using your student email address (or another one if you'll check it more - but be sure to always use the same one). Set a password and have your phone save it.

  4. Once logged in and at the adventure club group page, use your browser's "Add to Home Screen" feature. This turns it into an app icon. For Chrome on Android, it's in the menu in the top corner. For Safari on iOS (iPhones), it's in the Share menu.

That's it! Thanks, see you there!

  • Rather Long Version (optional):

You've probably heard by now that a Loomio group is used for proposals and voting. Actually, it's a full-fledged forum - kind of like a Facebook group, anyone can post things to the group that can then have follow-up discussion in the "thread".

This is more efficient than forwarding emails to a long list and maintaining that list, with replies going only to one person or to more people than necessary. By using Loomio, members can decide for themselves when to join or leave, and most importantly, how they want to be emailed. Rather than the officers remembering and tailoring to individual preferences, you can set your own limits for getting email from Adventure Club.

If you're annoyed by too much email, or it becomes enough that you start ignoring them altogether, you can just reduce the flow. You can even unsubscribe to all emails from us, especially if you'd rather just frequently check the site/app. By default Loomio will bundle up the posts from the day into one email called "Yesterday on Loomio" so you only get one per day. But if you don't want to wait until the next day, I suggest you instead set it up to email you for every single message (it's not like we have a hundred people). Then, you can just reply to that email, to post in the thread without ever leaving your inbox!

All of this can be managed on a per-thread basis, too - can't make it to an event? Unsubscribe from the thread and you'll stop hearing about it. Or you can do the opposite, turning everything off, and then subscribing to only the threads you care about (e.g. only the events you can make, or want to help plan). With all of this, there shouldn't be any problems of people being annoyed with too much email nor being unaware of what's happening.

Thus, all discussion will take place there from now on - including the kind of updates you'd expect by email (since posting in the group generates an email to all subscribed, therefore there's no point in doing both). So it's important you hop on Loomio now.

As a school club, we're supposed to use your student emails (@student.sussex.edu) for communication. However, since we're using Loomio, and not strictly email, you don't have to if you don't want to. After all, Loomio lets you sign up in a few ways - even with Google or Facebook accounts. If you really hate student email, or you check your personal email way more, use that! No one will know. It's better to use whatever will be most likely to reach you. Just be sure to remember what you chose, and always sign in the same way, or else you might end up making a new account instead. For example, if you have a personal Gmail account on your phone, and you tap "sign in with Google", it will probably use your personal Google account rather than your school one. At another time (or another device) you may have to sign in to your Google account when you try to use the "sign in with Google" button. But if you sign into your school Gmail instead of your personal, it doesn't know you're the same person, and you'll have a created a second Loomio account that has nothing in it :/ To avoid all of this confusion, especially for those not technically inclined, you should just always use the "sign in with Email" and always use your student email address. If you're more savvy, you can actually link your accounts together so that you can sign in with any of them.

Once you're signed in to Loomio (be sure to set it to stay that way, if possible), it's a good idea to turn the website into an app icon on your home screen. You won't get app notifications - those still come as emails - but it'll have easy access as an icon as if it were an app. From now on we'll even refer to Loomio as an 'app' for simplicity. Though this step is not required, it's easy to forget about the group unless you're getting (and opening) emails. Having app-like access that stays signed in will also make it so that we can have instant voting on-the-spot at a meeting using only our phones. Be sure to be on the Adventure Club Loomio page, already signed in, before hitting the Add to Home Screen button. If you're on some other page, like the login screen, you may have to log in every time you open the app! Also, if you find that you still have to login every time, and you have to log in by getting an email, just go into your Loomio account settings and set up a password instead. Then when you log in, have your phone browser remember your password permanently.

Oh, and it's a good idea to have your student email set up on your phone! You can just add it to the Gmail app you probably have - even if you already have a gmail account set up there, it can handle multiple. This way you get notified right away - no need to try to hop on a computer every few days.

Final note: help other members with this, if they need it. In the app anyone may add a member by email. Even you. Copy this text, and send it by email to any other interested students!

Cheers!
