Project: Guerrilla Manifesto/Petition

Nathan SchneiderNathan Schneider Fri 7 Oct 2016 11:11PMPublicSeen by 120

On the call today, we agreed on the idea of formulating a viral manifesto to further the #BuyTwitter cause as the buyout remains in the news cycle and channel that energy toward the longer-term cooperative.

I proposed a manifesto for Twitter users calling for a say, and co-ownership, as Twitter evolves to a new ownership structure. I'm not sure #BuyTwitter is the right framing. Maybe #WeAreTwitter or something like that. The hope is that we could get lots and lots of Twitter users to sign the manifesto and show our strength.

@arminsteuernagel1 usefully suggested that we could also have people who own shares of the company acknowledge their support and perhaps offer proxies to the cause. @tommcdonough rightly warned that we need to be careful of legal issues in doing so.

@tristancopleysmith has expressed interest in creating an accompanying video, which I think would be fantastic.

What else? Does someone feel inspired to start drafting, or offering ideas for those who do?

Here is Washington, DC, I have access to SEC regulators. I suggest we don't go public with the manifesto until we get some legal advice. Once I have a definite candidate to discuss this with, I will bring that meeting to a vote.

Nathan Schneider

Nathan SchneiderSat 8 Oct 2016 4:02PM

I think this is an extremely good point, Tom. Thank you. We definitely don't want to run afoul there. We'll definitely make sure to get the proper advice when we're harmonizing the legal structure with the public-facing rhetoric. There's definitely a danger of improperly advertising a security.

@ntnsndr overall love the manifesto draft but not sure this sentence adds any value:

" And if this doesn't pan out, don't worry; our cooperative is cooking up other plans for bringing democracy to the internet, whether the internet's profiteers like it or not."

Nathan Schneider

Nathan SchneiderSat 8 Oct 2016 9:41PM

Thanks, @josefdaviescoates. To me the value of that statement is to indicate that our efforts are beyond just Twitter. I think we need to indicate (basically to potential supporters) that we realize this is a longshot and we're developing a longer-term plan.

Do you have a suggestion for another way to convey this?

Josef Davies-Coates

Josef Davies-CoatesSat 8 Oct 2016 9:54PM

I think it was mostly the slightly confrontational tone of that sentence that didn't sit well with the bulk of the document that made it seem out of place.

You're a far more experienced wordsmith than I, but perhaps just mention something about the "platform asset-acquisition co-op" plans being cooked up?

Nathan Schneider

Nathan SchneiderSat 8 Oct 2016 9:59PM

Cool, that's helpful. Yeah, I'll try to tone down the ambiguous threat:)

Josef Davies-Coates

Josef Davies-CoatesSat 8 Oct 2016 10:05PM

perhaps just tweak this:

"One of the most hopeful things about this campaign, in my view, is that it’s a chance to flex our thinking and organizing around the ambitious idea of co-owning a major platform utility. Whatever becomes of Twitter, I hope we can work in a way so that we’re better equipped for this kind of possibility in the future."

As you wrote on the nice onboarding page you knocked up http://internetofownership.net/2016/10/04/a-guide-to-buytwitter/

Nathan Schneider

Nathan SchneiderSat 8 Oct 2016 10:05PM

How about this: "But Twitter is only the start; our cooperative is cooking up other plans for bringing democracy to the internet, too."

Nathan Schneider

Nathan SchneiderSat 8 Oct 2016 10:06PM

Okay! "But Twitter is only the start, a chance to flex our thinking and organizing around the ambitious idea of co-owning a major platform utility; our cooperative is cooking up other plans for bringing democracy to the internet, too."

Tom McDonough

Tom McDonoughSat 8 Oct 2016 9:34PM

I left a comment on the Slack page. Also:

"We the undersigned, some of whom are TWTR owners already, have opted to join ___ Cooperative and lead the transition. We hope etc."

Another comment: The Manifesto is directed to Twitter, Inc. and @timothyamcdonald has suggested posting it at various websites.

I'm not familiar with Medium or IoO, but the transition from a manifesto to Twitter to asking users to sign up should be less confusing. Perhaps just a simple link with a call to action at a different document. I'm sure you web folks can ace this. Be ready to handle 500,000 sign-ups.

On the options: a simple support statement with collection of contact info (and # of shares) will speed up this first stage. A proper contract will require time & legal expenses.

Josef Davies-Coates

Josef Davies-CoatesSat 8 Oct 2016 10:15PM

Definitely better imho. The "bringing democracy to the internet" stuff never really done it for me, but I'm just a pedant so can always find something so probably best ignored half the time :P

We need a hashtag for this campaign. Shall we stick with #BuyTwitter?

proposal by Nathan Schneider Closed Tue 11 Oct 2016 7:01PM

Outcome
by Nathan Schneider Tue 25 Apr 2017 5:51AM

It seems that we are somewhat divided, but that there is a general consensus toward using both #WeAreTwitter and #BuyTwitter.

Since the Guardian article came out, we've been organizing under the language of #BuyTwitter. That seems to have captured people's attention. Now, as we prepare the next phase of the outreach campaign, we face a question about whether to keep it.

Pros: Consistency, and it's a call to action.
Cons: It's a bit transactional, and it sounds expensive.

Others have made suggestions of other hashtags, including:

  • #WeAreTwitter
  • #TwitterIsUs
  • #IAmTwitter
  • #TwitterCoop
  • #ShareTwitter

What do you think? If you want to stick with #BuyTwitter, choose "agree." If not, say in your comment what you'd prefer.

Only used once?!? there are loads of #WeAreTwitter tweets (which is what you link to yourself, so I'm really confused as to how/why you only see one tweet there when there a loads?!? - do you mean only been used once in this specific context? I guess you must)

I looked at both WeAreTwitter and BuyTwitter on hashtagify and WeAreTwitter scores higher on popularity of use, see http://hashtagify.me/hashtag/wearetwitter and http://hashtagify.me/hashtag/buytwitter

Joining late here... #BuyTwitter is catchier but somehow doesn't convey the democratic aspect of this. But I'm having trouble coming up with something that does... #WeAreTwitter is closer, but seems ambiguous. Also, @ntnsndr -- can I get a Slack invite? tom@ladendorf.com

Why don't we use what's known and morph it as it grows.... (I have to say that deciding on names or memes is one of the hardest group decisions - i've sat through many Loomio discussions on this subject ) - the better way is to choose the least offensive option. For me it's the one that's already known. #wearetwitter is great too so it can be an addition.

#Twitterco-op 'reads' as 'twitter coop' IE a place for birds!

Alanna Irving

As @sophiejerram said, naming discussions can be a huge energy sink. They are the biggest bike shed conversations for a lot of Loomio groups. I'd warn against spending too much time on this. Seems like the top two hashtags can both be used, and then if this thing gets enough traction we can have a 'proper' branding workshop or messaging working group down the line.

Can we blast this on Monday?

proposal by Nathan Schneider Closed Fri 14 Oct 2016 1:27AM

by Nathan Schneider Tue 25 Apr 2017 5:51AM

Yeah let's do this.

Every day that passes is another day that the prospect of a Twitter sale goes by without our option on the table. I think we need to run this initial publicity campaign very soon. I propose we do so on Monday, October 17. That means:

  • A finished manifesto (see the current version here)
  • A website with a functioning petition system (@kirstenlambertsen)
  • An accompanying video that points to the website (@trizcs)
  • A press release and a press list to send it to (anyone?)

What do y'all think? Anything else that needs to be done? How comfortable are we with moving forward?

@timothyamcdonald the Thunderclap is a good idea. Want to start organizing that in #communications on Slack? I'm happy to join.

Josef Davies-Coates

Josef Davies-CoatesThu 13 Oct 2016 6:57PM

just to mention, most of the thunderclaps I've been involved with or have run didn't really work too well :-/

I''m pretty sure that in at least one case, when I was trying to raise awareness about an event I was organising, that the amount of time and effort it took signing people up to the thunderclap would've been much better spent just spreading the about the event and pointing people directly to the ticket page rather than to the thunderclap which then sent people to the ticket page.

And, after finally signing everyone up (this was when thunderclaps were still all or nothing, which it seems they mostly aren't anymore) and the thunderclap went out there was no discernible uptake in tickets sales at all :-/

Although I also note Loomio did one in the past, so perhaps @alanna could share her experiences about that if she knows anything about it?

Also, if we are going to do one, probably best to go pro so we actually able to export all the supporters email addresses (and so be able to contact them again), but that costs $650 and I'm not sure who would want to splash out that amount at this stage?

Alanna Irving

Alanna IrvingMon 17 Oct 2016 10:12AM

We had an OK experience with Thunderclap, but as you said our direct outreach was way more effective (and media coverage). So I'd advise not focusing much energy on a Thunderclap but instead just get people to share the link directly. Most important thing is to be very clear about which link we want everyone to share, and help people out with some pre-written tweets and facebook posts to use.

Danny Spitzberg

Danny SpitzbergThu 13 Oct 2016 7:29PM

I second @josefdaviescoates' comments on Thunderclap - they tend to be ineffective when used in isolation, without a path to and through it. For example, I was moved by Shaun King's op-ed's about a nation-wide boycott, and promptly signed up and posted about it (https://www.facebook.com/danbann/posts/10157581009695217). I was even more moved by the Movement for Black Lives pledge http://action.movementforblacklives.org/pledge which I'm sure many of you have seen, too.
