Because more of the nation and the world is moving to Asheville, we need to intake their cultures, thoughts, and ideas to make our community even better; including the 50+ silver communities and collectives.

The Internet is linking me to people all over the world. How can I be part of this expanding collection of people without being stripped of my sense of self? Without losing a connection to my contribution? A connection to my responsibility?

Perhaps, with an infrastructure that brings a respect of diversity, and a belief that every person has something to contribute, I will more easily find my place.

Old systems have peaked and are collapsing and the pressure to respond to climate change and population growth are increasing. New modes of transportation, energy, communication, and learning are emerging around the world, made possible by innovative technology. New systems to support quality of life for all people are needed and technology is playing an essential role. We need new ways to think and do together, ways that support the commons and make room for all to flourish. The next wave of social infrastructure will emerge through our collective activity. We must use new systems and ways of working -- use the commons, the collective, open source, and cooperation in surfacing solutions--to create the next wave.

Building on what others have said...

I would want to say something about how WNC is a hub for new approaches in many fields - sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, alternative education, and holistic health care, to name a few. And that many people come here looking for more out of life, wanting to be creative, have a positive impact in the world, be part of a vibrant, healthy community. Then something about how a common complaint is that people here do not collaborate, people are isolated and fragmented in their efforts to do their work, create change, etc. Also, people in rural areas are particularly isolated, e.g., not considered in plans that are focused on Asheville. See an opportunity to model a new way of collaborating, use technology to connect people.

Let's bring this conversation to a close before next Tuesday's meeting. In an effort to bring together all of the above in a short statement, what do you think of the following as our "We Believe..." statement:

We believe people want more out of life: they want to be creative, have a positive impact, and be part of a healthy community. New approaches and global, intergenerational connectivity is a vital part of that future. WNC is already a hub in many fields, including social enterprise, agriculture, renewable energy, and holistic healthcare. We believe technology can play a vital role in expanding innovative solutions that connect people across the region so that everyone is included, individual strengths are respected, and people’s efforts to create positive change thrive.

I like how it starts with the desired outcome, and then gets to how technology is a tool for getting there. I would maybe leave out "holistic" and just leave it at "healthcare", but that's probably just a reflex on my part.

I really like this, a minor grammatical correction - 'is' to 'are' in the sentence starting with 'New approaches'

I like how it is focused on people being amazing versions of themselves and that we are interested in helping people to do that!
