Loomio

Group page mockup

Inspired by Rob G and a comment from Neil Morris, I've been thinking today about a replacement for the current group page that

  • better holds the group's identity
  • is a reasonable public-facing representation of the group
  • highlights the most useful content that Loomio generates: decisions & outcomes

Here's a first go at a mockup:

@matthewbartlett a great improvement - thanks for tackling it. I think it is probably one of the most important parts of the whole Loomio experience.

I've delayed commenting on it because I wanted to think it through somewhat so I could give a more considered response.

I've been thinking through what are the most important things that I would be interested in when I get to a group page, and what would hooked me in to either joining the discussion or to discussing things further. For me the group description is the teaser (you have it there),

I'd then want to look at "the Agenda" i.e. current proposals and current discussions (to show the group is alive and considering important things) - these would make. These give me an idea as to whether I can contribute to the group and whether my time would be well spent by taking part.

As part of the design I would also like to see members being able to rate discussions according to the importance that they consider them to have. Those with the highest rankings would move up to the top of the list.

I'd then want to have a way to "Add items to the Agenda" An area to start new proposals and/or Agenda items (i.e. discussions).

I'd then want to have an for "The Record" area. It would be an area where a record of past decisions and discussions are kept, with the ability to move the discussions there if they are no longer current. (proposals could probably automatically move there x number of days after the have been made) ...I would have it showing the last 3-4 decisions (i.e. proposals) with a view more link, and then the same for the last 3-4 discussions.

I'd then have a whose is who section, which starts with the members (pics of say up to 10 (two rows of 5) with a link to more and then a list of people with responsibilities in the group and whom to contact for more information. (may be some of it in a link so there isn't information overload on the group page) This area is important so people can seek clarification about the group, for example they might have been invited to the group without being given the full information.

An observation which is driving my suggestions here is that Loomio is actually doing a lot more than enabling collaborative decision making, we are making meetings more effective as we can now discuss and decide lots of things concurrently, in our own time and place settings, with the added advantage for groups that both meet in a physical sense and online, that their in person meetings can be a lot more focused on the most important things.

I hope this is helpful.

Two other points - i) I would be keen to see a pending section for discussions that need to be had, and proposals that need to be put, once other discussions have concluded or other decisions have been made. ii) In terms of the appearance of the list of discussions I think having the first 150 or so characters of the discussion context showing would be a helpful addition in terms of increasing the engagement with the discussion topics.

Love the new facebooky group page, I think it might be time for a more representative pic. The trees in my opinion makes the Loomio Community page seem peaceful and serene. I could imagine a more lively photo of lots of people coming together? Not dissing the photo just the message.
