Loomio

Simpler inivtation

When I pitched loomio to my local hackerspace, Sudo room something like two years ago, it was met with solid support. In person. The tool is useful and it solves a real problem in groups of people willing to collaborate alternatively.

It wasn't until the process of introducing it to the group online that the system gained resistance. As a previously listserv-based organization as many hackerspaces are, the member list is literally anyone who can receive an email, although they aren't necessarily known individually to the person proposing loomio as a polling solution.

Users who hadn't heard the pitch in person didn't like being emailed by an organization they weren't familiar with. They weren't willing to register for a service they hadn't heard about, while I sincerely believe had they just seen the interface, with a few hot topics being debated and voted on, they'd jump right in.

That's why I propose that each group should have a link that anyone who has can use to view and apply for a group.

Registration for these link-private groups should be more of a requirement to vote, and it could even still pend on admin approval.

This type of security has proven very effective and popular on Google Docs, and I think for many public organizations, it would work fine and increase adoption.

The public group feature solves this problem

My mistake, I hadn't yet found the public group feature, that seems to be exactly what I was looking for.

nonetheless @dan the challenge you describe is very real. We hope that Loomio 1.0 will make this introduction much easier, from a person you to now to a discussion you care about. We will look forward hearing how it works for you sonce we have that developed:)

@danfinlay I love that you've hacked Loomio to make a decision by yourself! Brilliant :)

@danfinlay, on your suggestion for an 'anyone with a link' sharing feature - that's something we're talking about a lot in our roadmap. Specifically, we're thinking about 'anyone with a link can view' and 'anyone with a link can participate' settings.

Really glad to see you're thinking along the same lines!

I don't think we're doing a very good job of making it easy for new users to see the existing feature set. It's something we'll be working on!
