Loomio

API Reference?

I was curious as to whether the Loomio platform offers any kind of API that can be leveraged by other apps. I didn't see any guides or information about it, but I would be extremely curious in seeing whether it would be possible to reference newly created Loomio discussions or outcome events.

The main use case I would be interested in playing around with would be an integration for Riot Messenger, which is an open and decentralized communication app that kind of works like Slack. Several areas of interest I could think of:

  • Render data from proposal into an embedded preview of a post when a link is shared. Maybe tally up reactions?
  • Signify when certain events happen in a proposal (eg, a proposal closing, along with information about the outcome)
  • Notifications for when a proposal is closing.
  • Setting a discussion topic in a room to reflect the most active recent discussion in a Loomio Group.

I suppose this is all somewhat forward to ask about, but I am currently looking at using Riot to build a collaborative community, potentially for activist or cooperative purposes.

We're certainly interested in supporting integrations with other open software :) @gdpelican or @robertguthrie should be able to give more details about the state of the API.

Hi @deadsuperhero , our API documentation is a bit piecemeal at the moment, but the good news is that the API itself is fully functional and quite stable, and your use cases seem to be within the bounds of what we can do.

Here are some resources to get your started.
- Some basics about the API and fields it can return
- How to create and connect via an OAuth application
- A full list of all the routes exposed by our API

Feel free to ping me on here with further questions as they come up.

For outgoing information, you may want to look into using the webhook functionality, which is bundled up in our loomio_webhooks plugin. This is how we implement our slack integration currently, and creating new types of webhooks is pretty easy.

I'm happy to type up some further instructions in this direction if you need it.

@deadsuperhero How have you been getting on with this? Let me know if I can help in some way.
