Here are my initial thoughts on implementing user photos. Would love to hear other ideas or comments.

General
- Hover over image blows it up?
Group landing page
- Tiny trello size image next to user names
Discussion Page
- Facebook size next to discussion item
- Trello size next to positions
Header (all pages)
- Personal image next to name
User Settings page
- Upload an image
- Show preview of image
- Adjust thumbnail feature

Sounds good. Do you have any thoughts about whether or not we should be using something like Gravatar? Instead of handling image uploads ourselves?

Jon Lemmon

Also, what happens if the user doesn't have a photo? Alanna was saying she has an issue with Yammer when people don't upload a profile image because then when users without profile photos post it's hard to identify who is who.

So she'd like a way of addressing that issue. Either by allowing admins to set photographs for the users (probably not ideal), giving users a preset list of images to choose from if they don't load up their own, or defaulting their photo to a random photo of a cat (my personal favorite option).

All of those options seem like a bit of a pain though. Probably the best option would be to do what trello does and default their image to their initials.

Looks good andrew. agree with jon. Gravitar or alternatives might be worth investigating.

This seems like it would probably be a helpful RailsCast for explaining how to implement Gravatar:

http://railscasts.com/episodes/244-gravatar

Also, once you've decided exactly how you're going to implement this, would you mind sticking it up as a proposal explaining how the functionality is going to work? Then we can show it to the rest of the group and make sure they are happy with it.

I took a look at Trello's upload photo process and put screen shots in the Google Doc of that process. I think we can adapt a similar process, but a bit simpler for now.

  1. Default to initials or first to characters from email
  2. On the right of image, have “Change Avatar” section
  3. Change Avatar: a. Get gravatar image based on email b. Initials avatar option c. Upload a picture - automatic stretch or skew - they can upload a better sized one if they want

Jon Lemmon

Cool, that's all sounding good! So if you choose option (c) (uploading an image), it gets used INSTEAD of a gravatar, is that right?

And are those steps that you've written down in your comment what you propose that we do? Do you mind just synthesizing everything that you've researched and are planning on implementing into a proposal over there ---->

Then we can all approve it and get some sweet loomio action going on! Sorry, I know it's a bit pedantic! But just humour me. I think we need to start practicing using Loomio as much as possible so we can start fine-tuning our design processes and figure out how we can improve the app to better suit our needs.

Review this first: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Q8PTaUMtX5c9ZZ1Fg9ACo7g_LHan9XzyMBdP7hLSjOo/edit

Here is the plan for selecting a users image:
- Default to initials or first two characters from email
- On the right of image, have “Change Avatar” section
- Change Avatar:
a. Get gravatar image based on email
b. Initials avatar option, use name initials or first 2 characters of the email
c. Upload a picture - automatic stretch or skew - they can upload a better sized one if they want. This will be used in place of the Gravatar

And here are the plans for displaying the images:
General
- Hover over image blows it up? Not in this phase
- Square images everywhere
Group landing page
- Tiny trello size image next to user names in its own column
Discussion Page
- Facebook comment size next to discussion item in its own column
- Have your own photo where you are posting a new comment
- No image next to positions
Header (all pages)
- Personal image next to name
