Budget document

Matt created this simple spreadsheet to start us off on the budgeting process.

@ntnsndr are you able to export the data from Open Collective to paying members tab on the spreadsheet? Without login permissions, the data visible on the OC page does not break down easily by month...

Good question. I actually just asked Pia of Open Collective about exporting member data as a key need for co-ops using OC. I don't think it's there right now, unfortunately. But I'll ask if there's any way of getting this stuff. Putting pressure on OC for this sort of thing is always good. But it will be easier if we get more platform co-ops on the OC platform demanding the same thing (or if we replace OC with a co-op alternative!).

// Begin obnoxiousness

It would be nice if we could documents this in the Social.coop files on Sandstorm rather than a closed-source corporate platform! (But I realize Ethercalc is terrible.)

// End obnoxiousness

Another thing: One design feature I really like about OC is that there isn't really an admin back-end. Everything the admin sees, pretty much, is the same as what everyone else sees. I just have a bit more power to press buttons, like approving invoices.

Then OC definitely needs to make more granular reports; it's devilishly hard to calculate our actual monthly budget when we have monthly contributors, yearly contributors, one time contributors, etc.

To sandstorm, @mayel and I tried to create a new doc for the minutes of our last meeting, and ended up flummoxed. If you'd be down to lead an intro session for a Hangouts on Air that could be shared with folks afterwards, I'd attend and be happy to run the tech on the session through the Cooperative Vermont Youtube channel...

I've just heard back from OC, and actually admins can download CSV exports. I've just attached the current one here. Are there any feature requests we should make for this ex

I love the proposal for a Goog hangout to get us on SS:) To create a new file in Sandstorm:

  • Go to your Apps dashboard (the four squares in the top left), and click on the app your want to use (or install in through the "+" botton, which takes you to the app market).
  • Select "create new _____" (where the blank varies based on the app).
  • The new file (called "grain") will appear in your grains list (the folder button on the top-right of the screen, under the Apps dashboard).
  • You can open up the Social.coop Collection grain and add your new grain to it.

@ntnsndr create a schedule poll and let's get a time for the SS intro lined up!

Looks like others started on this and not sure if it dead ended here or was picked up somewhere else but has anyone taken a crack at a per monthly spread sheet budget that shows income and expenses per account type? Something more than logging expenses but where we could begin to anticipate and prepare for all costs of keeping this platform afloat including the current "hidden" administration costs. We could use a google.doc template to start unless there are other suggestions?

I am working on a proposal to revise the way the sliding scale Membership fees are presented and allocated but need to understand the projected operating expenses a little more.
