The vast majority of high-profile creators on YouTube are white and male.

As Akilah Hughes writes in a recent article on Fusion, “there are arguably fewer than 30 creators darker than a paper bag among the top 500 YouTubers.” In other words, less than 6% of high-profile YouTubers are people of color.

The same data source also indicates that only 18% of the top subscribed YouTubers are people who identify or present as women, or 60 of 327.

Akilah’s article asks for high-profile creators and YouTube itself to promote diverse talent, most notably through sharing videos on their social media. We can do the same in this space.

Ooh, I've been wanting to read Felica Day's book. Thanks for reminding me!

Is "You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost)" full of awkwardness. I love Felicia Day, but I have a low tolerance for awkward and Felicia sometimes plays up her awkwardness and has been quite a bit in the lead up to the book.

I love her serious blog posts though, so if the the book has more of that sort of thing then that is more what I would like.

My next creator to suggest is Brian Murphy, he is a gay male Christian who has a lot of interesting things to say about both Christianity and homosexuality which is a combination I do not see a lot so it has been an interesting perspective for me to hear.

@geanils Yeah, there's a fair bit of awkwardness in it. That's one of the key things to the book, I'd say, but it seems to me like that's more of how she goes about telling serious stories than anything else. Like, she talks about a lot of stuff that's hard to share with the world, and the way that she shares that stuff is by making it awkward and funny and goofy.

Thanks Auden, sounds like a great book for someone who is not me.

My next recommendation is Animal Wonders Montana, an educational channel about animals care and rehabilitation. It is hosted by Jessi Knudsen Castañeda and occasionally Augusto Castañeda.

They talk about animal behaviours and care both for common and exotic animals.

Gea, I LOVE Animal Wonders! Jessi has such a great personality and shines on camera, you can totally tell she loves her work and genuinely cares about the animals she works with. :)

I know Runa!!! she is so enthusiastic and cares so much about animal welfare <3 <3 <3

My next recomendation is Bucky Says Stuff (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCamVRx0xBlTQVHWfM5bFTiA/videos)

Bucky is a disabled Korean Canadian who makes videos about disability issues such as disability access and sponsorship for disabled sports teams.

He seems to have a very informed opinion, like he studies each topic before each video as well as talking from his own experience.
