New website icons!

DB Dee Brooks Public Seen by 30

Hey Creatives! Can you help me with 3 little icons by the end of this week? We need these for the launch of the new website on the 10th!

Please see the attached screenshot (don't get hung up on the "hero image" that's not the final one) what we need feedback on is the icons for each area of the website:

  1. Events/Unconference

  2. NDIS/CoS/BiS

  3. ABCD/AoPCB

Please share your thoughts/feelings about what little icon would signify/identify these areas of the org! Thanks!

@Michaela Kennedy Hi Mic, I can definitely do the rock art style for all three, I will need the weekend to do them, is there enough time @Dee Brooks?

@Rosemary Profilio can you help out with an Auslan sign for build capacity or something that can represent that? My only reservation about helping is the power position it puts people in that receive help. Would support be better? I like the rock art idea but instead of using others can we make our own? @Mark Cauvin Can all three be in rock art style but use our own designs? I'm ok with the hands to the centre for community, lots of people for events and not sure about NDIS, something with hands I think, or maybe something growing out of a hand.

http://www.auslan.org.au/dictionary/words/build-1.html .. This is the sign for build.. there's no sign that I can see for capacity.. but happy to keep brain storming.. :)

Hi Dee, I believe that cave art image would be public domain, my gess is yes :)

DB

Dee Brooks Wed 5 Aug 2020 2:08AM

All good! We can re-poll tomorrow - I just want action quickly because new website is live on Monday and you are all jumping - thanks!

Noting:

  • NDIS looks sad and needs interpretation of "capacity" instead of "help" @Jasmine Winter ?

  • Is rock image permission needed? @Mark Cauvin ?

  • ABCD looks childish @Michelle Dunscombe ?

Overall, rock art style is ok if permission/origin is ok!

I dont like the NDIS symbol. The symbol used in the example is not Auslan and it doesn't mean Help or Need. We need to be clear and respectful if we are going to use Auslan or any other cultural symbol and ensure its correct. I would check with Rosie on this and I agree with Michaela's comments on the other symbols.

I think it represents the item well and it’s a nice image!

The Ndis one looks a little sad to me 🙁

Just want to make sure it is respectful. Sorry don't like the other two much. NDIS is not helping - we build capacity and the COBU one looks too childish / used too much already. Sorry I know we are not voting on the first two but I don't know where else to put my perspective. Happy to discuss further.

I need more information on the Events Icon. Where has the rock art image come from? Do we have permission to use it? Do we intend to acknowledge the origins of the image on the website? I like the concept I just need clarification.

Ok thanks, makes sense, I like the style idea.

MC

Mark Cauvin Wed 5 Aug 2020 1:38AM

Hey Mic, My intention was just stylistically not the actual image, Dee could you add this detail to the pole, if the outcome was right all the images would be adapted to reflect this style. The style is 1 dimensional, more prehistoric/organic feel rather than primary colours, repeated shapes and patterns.

MK

Michaela Kennedy Wed 5 Aug 2020 1:26AM

I like the hands one - my only concern is it respectful to indigenous people of Australia, maybe ask the RAP team.

DB

Dee Brooks Wed 5 Aug 2020 1:00AM

Done! Please vote!

MC

Mark Cauvin Wed 5 Aug 2020 12:04AM

Hi Dee, of course, I'll have to do some preparatory work to iron the images into the style, should I wait till you plant a poll?

DB

Dee Brooks Tue 4 Aug 2020 10:32PM

I really like where you're going, Mark! Do you think we could somehow get Michelle's ABCD suggestion, Jas's NDIS suggestion (#1) and one of these for Unconf, in the same style?

MC

Mark Cauvin Tue 4 Aug 2020 10:04PM

Okay maybe my idea is too far out but I am thinking stylistically ancient art but with a soft mellow edge. Some scrap book type ideas, images white superimposed on grey.

MK

Michaela Kennedy Wed 5 Aug 2020 1:23AM

I like the second one, in our colours. I don't like the idea of helping, I prefer capacity building. Is there an Auslan sign for capacity building?

DU

1 sounds like a great idea! 😊

DB

Dee Brooks Tue 4 Aug 2020 8:42PM

I love the Auslan idea, Jas! What Michelle has offered for ABCD is similar to your 3rd one so between your 1 & 2, I would choose #1 - how about you? (I'll put these to a quick poll soon)

DU

I thought something similar to these, but in our colours?.. Support, growth and gatherings came to mind. I did think for the NDIS icon - The Auslan sign for "support" or "Help" drawn in our colours? .. Just an idea.. :)

DB

Dee Brooks Tue 4 Aug 2020 8:40PM

Thanks Aleks! It's just one icon for NDIS - CoS & BiS words sit underneath the icon... I appreciate your thinking though!

DU

Aleks Jovanovic Tue 4 Aug 2020 6:03AM

Here's an initial vision for the BIS icon

DB

Dee Brooks Sun 9 Aug 2020 10:12PM

Thanks Fran - I'm not sure that our new logo image would work as an icon, as well?

DU

Thanks Dee.

I like to think of the support we provide like a spiderweb. We keep creating and expanding the person network and the person is o the centre, we start small and grow. As we support the person with new learning, there are new pathways created in our brain. There are a range of different perspective to include - the rainbow of life experiences. Therefore I like the attached image captures my imagination and makes sense to me. Im hoping to contact the creative Jedi to bring life to my imagination. Nothing set in stones.

DB

Dee Brooks Tue 4 Aug 2020 2:35AM

Yep, all of them - it will guide people to the information about our workshops, gatherings, Unconferences; any events where we will be inviting people to come join us!

People will arrive at the landing page of our website and have three choices about the information they want to find; they will click on the 3 icons for this and that will take them to that section of the website... Hope this helps!

MC

Mark Cauvin Tue 4 Aug 2020 12:20AM

Hi Dee, I've been brainstorming, EVENTS is the hard one, any suggestions anyone? Can I clarify Dee what's the nature of events. I guess training, AOH, eventually music (?). I'm thinking learning, gathering, groupthink, projects, ??? I need more words :)

DB

Dee Brooks Tue 4 Aug 2020 2:30AM

That's exactly why we're looking for feedback on new ones... 😉

People will arrive at our landing page and will click on the one they need the information from so, yes, they are needed...

See my comment on Michelle's suggestion above re: where they might sit... thanks!

Thanks for clarifying @Dee Brooks . I think the icons are very corporate and don't really fit with our new more organic rebranding. Are they really needed within the hero piece? Id like to see them below the image with Maggie's brushstrokes and icons that have meaning and purpose to us an Organisation and that are easily identifiable by people searching for information. Just my opinion.

DB

Dee Brooks Tue 4 Aug 2020 2:37AM

Fair call! And I really like your creative feedback about colour contrast ratio!

JS

Jodie Schleusener Tue 4 Aug 2020 2:32AM

Oh but Dee, creativity is on a spectrum...I just happen to be at the opposite end to everyone else😆🤓

DB

Dee Brooks Mon 3 Aug 2020 10:51PM

Great point, Jodie! I'll let IT know that one!

Aside, you know this is the Creative Jedi, right? Haha!

JS

Jodie Schleusener Mon 3 Aug 2020 10:35PM

My creative gene left the building a while back unfortunately, so my only request is that whatever we use, the icons and background colour/image has a high enough colour contrast ratio to be accessible for people with a vision impairment.

DB

Dee Brooks Mon 3 Aug 2020 8:44PM

Thanks Meredith, we don't want a logo, particularly not an established one - if you look at the screenshot, it's just the 3 almost translucent icons that represent each "section" of the website...

I really like Michelle Walkers hand drawn NDIS logo for the NDIS Space from what she showed us the other day on zoom. Or the original NDIS Registered Logo that we are allowed to use. See below.

MC

Mark Cauvin Mon 3 Aug 2020 5:11AM

Sure, I will call you, I'm not sure waht you mean by the hero image.....yet

DB

Dee Brooks Mon 3 Aug 2020 10:53PM

Hey @Michelle Dunscombe - feedback from Chris:

"They can be any colour. If they don't fit the hero image it will have to go somewhere else"

So, the ABCD/AoPCB icon is done! Haha!

MD

Michelle Dunscombe Mon 3 Aug 2020 4:29AM

Hey @Dee Brooks do they have to be black? If not, would this work for Cobu? I did also notice "Contributing to Change" have we changed from "At the heart of change"?

DB

Dee Brooks Mon 3 Aug 2020 6:55AM

That's why this is in the Creative Jedi, @Brett Pischke ?!? Hahaha!
