Give feedback on comments as if they are proposals
It's handy to be able to 'like' another member's comment, rather than adding another comment just to agree. However, it would be great to be able to indicate disagreement, as well as agreement, with no interaction indicating an abstention. Obviously each comment wouldn't need the pie chart or the position statements (this would be covered by just making further comments in the discussion), just the little thumbs-up/ thumbs-down icons for agree and disagree, with a number next to each of them, indicating how many people have agreed/ disagreed.
The benefit of this is that rather than having to implement a whole separate proto-proposal ("ideas") feature in the interface, a proto-proposal could be made as a comment. If it doesn't get a high level of agreement, counter-proposals could be made in further comments, ideally iterating closer to consensus. If it does, it can be elevated to a proposal to formalize a decision. This would also mean you don't need to allow proposal texts in the formal 'proposals' engine to be edited after members start taking positions, to allow faster iteration of proposals.
This is a big personal focus (outside of Loomio). Here's my rough personal priority of desirable peer feedback/psychometric systems:
- a direct "agree/disagree" mechanic, including a collective visual summary, plus emoji "reactions" options similar to Slack's.
- a direct "agree/disagree" mechanic plus the option to "like" comments
- a direct "agree/disagree" mechanic, on its own
- emoji "reactions" options, without an "agree/disagree mechanic
- no peer feedback options at all
- a "like" option on its own.
I put the "like only" system last because when that's the only option, I think it especially tends to reflect various loyalties and tribal tendencies.
It would be kind of cool to have some reactions that were positive, that didn't imply agreement. Like slashdot's rating system (fresh, funny, insightful, interesting, maybe; they also negative ones).
I would probably have:
- agree
- good info
- insightful
- funny
and:
- disagree
- off-topic
- stupid(/nonsense/something similar but less agressive/offensive)
- misleading info
- repetition
If the agree/disagree ones are to be used for actually measuring anything, perhaps they could be independent (i.e. I can disagree even when I think something is funny).
Maybe it should be possible to use any combination of reactions, except mutually exclusive ones (agree/disagree, good/misleading info).
I guess all of that is vaguely along the lines of Greg's first option, but I would vastly prefer explicit text-based flags to the heavily context-dependent emoji reactions like slack (also, slack has way too many options, and some of them are just stupid).

yeah, patchwork used to have a free-form text-based reactions feature that i quite enjoyed (it disappeared after a few re-writes of the app), keen to see something of the sort in Loomio (also happy it's now a thing due to popularity in Slack). :)
I think text-based flags for irrelevant/off-topic and false info could be very helpful. "Misleading info" is a can of worms IMO; any cherry-picking can seem misleading, and we all cherry-pick at times.
@strypey in Slack these are called "Reactions" It's a pretty great feature, and I think everyone feels the same way you do that it would be great to have them. They're on the roadmap somewhere.
Stay tuned, we need to refresh our commitment to a community driven roadmap as soon as we get 1.0 out the door.
