Loomio

New feature: Document management for groups

Hey folks,

I've just deployed one of the more oft-requested features on our roadmap, which is document management for your group.

You'll now notice a paperclip in the action dock of threads, polls, and groups:

This will allow you to either upload files locally from your computer, or link to existing online resources like google docs, trello boards, websites with further information, or anything else that may provide more context to your group, discussion, or decision.

Additionally, we've written a resources page for groups which allows you to easily manage and track down resources which have been uploaded to your group. It's searchable and backported to already include any documents you may already have uploaded as attachments.

I'm keen to iterate this feature quite quickly to user feedback, so don't hold back - let us know what's rough. What can we do to make it easier for your group to manage resources that aren't on Loomio?

introduce #tags for grouping resources?

this seems to have removed previously uploaded images (to a thread description) and replaced them with links... which is not great

ben h.

any fix for this - our images have gone (-: (well aren’t displayed)

Julien Carnot

I can see the add resources feature in dev (the resources are not saved though) but not on loomio.org: the attachment icon is no longer shown on discussions or decisions forms, and on comments forms, it still only offers to pick a local file. Seems like the deploy did not succeed for me.

An additional suggestion: the resource list could show last edit/upload date for resources in the title tooltip of the link to the resource or next to the filesize, in order to see if there is a new version I should check.

@ben29 Could you link me to an example thread or two of a thread that has this? You can preview the images by hovering over them for a moment, and clicking on them will take you directly to the image, so I suppose I'm curious to see some use cases where it's really necessary that a thumbnail is displayed.

Robert Guthrie

I don't know how you're going to find "really necessary" in this situation, but I've found it really nice that attaching images means that they are included in full in the context and no action is required to see them- not just a thumbnail but a preview as wide as the context box. Full width images like this always make me happy and I'd love to see them back.

agree Robert - can this be turned off until it allows for both normal (as before) displayed attachments - plus links to other types of resources?

@gdpelican

and we would prefer more than a thumb nail too - this particular example was people choosing from a range of designs - so need to see side by side ideally and full size - also rollover doesn't work on mobile (does it?) - thread is here

favicon is fixed (-:

New resources for my group (eh8mAZFD) are not being added to the Resources area; and just two of our many historical resources are showing up there too.

also - now all uploads are listed - those originally attached to the description are now mixed with those - this is confusing/annoying in this context - and i imagine others - there will be times when you only want certain images linked to the description (i.e. not everything uploaded to the thread comments) - seems like a tricky thing to provide user control over

quite a big change to make - @gdpelican - surprised this was rolled out without some small group testing...

Thanks for mimicing Trello here and not discriminating links over file resources. In our work, a plethora of Etherpads and HackMD, as well as Cryptpad files sustain the communication in chats or forums. This will be a huge support in keeping the ties in online communities closer together. Thanks.

Like @matthewbartlett, I don't see a 'Resources' page, just the 'Attachments' pane/page, which lacks the context/content distinction visible in James' screenshot in the thread context above. Should I be able to see it?

Paperclip/add resource works fine, thanks. In my group I doubt we'll add resources from elsewhere, just upload jpgs and pdfs.

I would find it useful to have file types distinguished: all images from all pdfs, for example. Useful also, within these types, to have sort options: date uploaded, filename.

Misleading report: In a group that has four attachments uploaded, the attachments page header says 'No attachments found for this group' - then lists the four attachments.

Related to that comment on attachments not being counted . . . Managing attachments (as distinct from online resources) does need a bit of cleaning up. When attachments are uploaded in a comment, they don't appear to show up in Loomio's 'memory' of attachments - for example, don't get logged in the group description (which is generally OK). When a file is uploaded using the 'Attachments' page, it does get displayed in the group description. Which really is giving any old file too much prominence?

In addition to the option to rename an attachment, it would be very helpful to have an Edit option in the Attachments page, to an existing uploaded file with an alternate one - for example, if errors have been corrected in an updated version. Otherwise, chasing references across the group to a now-replaced file is a pain in the butt.

It would help to be able to sort the Attachments list alphabetically on filename, in addition to date of upload. And a sort on file type - jpg, pdf, word, etc - would be wicked!
