It's unclear how this strategy is meant to be anything more than political theater.

I think there is absolutely no chapter consensus on this action, National DSA M4A's campaign is currently divided on the question, the event seems unlikely to be a success (49 saying going), no organizations have signed on, the speakers list is almost all podcasters, and this is currently a massive discussion in DSA.

I think it would be an awful idea to sign on to this event at this time. Not only would members be mad at us with a decision to sign on but they would be right to be.

I am voting against endorsing/supporting this due to a lack of discernable strategy to achieve Medicare for All following a vote (that will likely fail) on the House floor. The Force the Vote website only says that voters will "hold our representatives accountable" based on the floor vote. It is unclear how that strategy will advance the fight for Medicare for All.

I do not believe this strategy will advance Medicare for All and I do believe it could harm the socialist movement if DSA endorsed it. The proponents of this approach have repeatedly stated that members of congress and orgs that disagree with them are sellouts who don't care about Medicare for All. I simply do not believe that this is true of DSA's federal elected officials.

We will win Medicare for All with a movement of millions of organized workers, not parliamentary tactics.

As I will elaborate in my comment, I don't think we need to think we'll win the floor vote to think forcing the vote can be a productive way to push the conversation on M4A. 39, 379 people signed the Force the Vote petition on Action Network:

In addition to what Brian eg al have mentioned, Our chapter deserves to have discussion on this issue before we publicly endorse or support such an action.

One thing I always ask is if the program we're voting on is narrowly tailored to our mission. Because this is M4A specific, one could argue that it is indeed tailored. (The comments don't provide enough characters for me to elaborate.)

As the overseer of the membership portfolio, I support "endorsement" in the spirit of solidarity with our members who, in good faith, are organizing for M4A via this cause, even if I disagree with the tactic.

While this is a massive discussion in DSA nationally, if our chapter's M4A working group came to democratic consensus on supporting the action, I feel ok about supporting it as well.

I haven't fully weighed into the Twitter discourse on the issue, but I disagree that forcing a vote is simply political theater. If we can actually get the 15 stated reps to refuse voting for Pelosi, that would, as the campaign website suggests, help progress the discussion in a huge way. And I think it's feasible to push on those reps. We don't have to win the vote that's being forced for the vote to be impactful. Additionally, to push against Stu's concern about the lack of strategy of holding reps accountable after the floor vote, if we can actually get them to participate in forcing the vote, that decision will be a huge motivation for them to continue the fight so as not to appear weak or flip floppy.

While we can't be sure how many people will actually attend the event, 39, 379 people have signed the "House Progressives: #ForceTheVote on Medicare for All Now" petition on Action Network, a number that can be pushed farther through the event being voted on. It's these signatures and people calling their reps that matter:https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/force-the-vote
