Sign Never Again Pledge as Chi Hack Night

CW Christopher Whitaker Public Seen by 384

This pledge states that we will not cooperate with the US Government in building registries based on race or religion.

"We, the undersigned, are employees of tech organizations and companies based in the United States. We are engineers, designers, business executives, and others whose jobs include managing or processing data about people. We are choosing to stand in solidarity with Muslim Americans, immigrants, and all people whose lives and livelihoods are threatened by the incoming administration’s proposed data collection policies. We refuse to build a database of people based on their Constitutionally-protected religious beliefs. We refuse to facilitate mass deportations of people the government believes to be undesirable."

I propose we sign this as Chi Hack Night. It certainly fits within our values and our goals for 2017 (resist disenfranchisement). I'm not 100% sure what we could actually do to oppose such a registry, but making this kind of statement is a good start.

Count me in. If a registry is started, we could all "register", adding noise to the data and making it less useful.

I signed this pledge.

I don't see it as a partisan issue. I see it as an ethical one and something that is at the core of Chi Hack Night in benefiting the public good.

My only concern with signing as ChiHackNight goes back to the partisan/non-partisan discussion from last month. If we sign the pledge as ChiHackNight, it won't be politically neutral anymore. Personally, I think I'm ok with that and would definitely sign the pledge as an individual. But I wanted to point this out.

Also, the focus of the pledge is on individuals, not organizations.

Stated on the pledge itself: "Note: Signatories’ references to affiliated organizations below are for identification purposes and are not intended to imply an endorsement by the organization. "

Given this, I think anyone that is motivated to sign should do so and choose to affiliate themselves however they'd like, including as a member of Chi Hack Night.
