Hui #3 Keynote Korero - Pause Breath Smile

NL Nick Laurence Public Seen by 31

Have noticed a lot of energy around the idea of mindfulness/mental health education in schools lately, and think that our community would really love to have Grant/Tash Rix who have been stewarding the Pause Breathe Smile project come and speak to us. This thread is to discuss this possibility, and also an opporunity to suggest other keynotes - although we probably only need one keynote speaker per hui (a la Robin Youngson at Hui #1).

Tash has come back with a wish list of needs that PBS has for 2017:
1. Most useful for us would be exposure to, and connections with, decision-makers in education, health and central government.
E.g. we would like to get the word out there about Pause, Breathe, Smile and form strategic partnerships at a high level with Principal’s Association, Teacher’s Association, Resource Teacher Learning and Behaviour management, Ministry of Education, REAP, other leaders in education or health, e.g. DHBs, Primary Health Organisations, other community education and health providers focussed on tamariki and rangatahi wellbeing. I wonder whether the Ministry for Youth Development, new Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Youth Justice Social Workers, Stand for Children etc. might be interested in hearing about PBS?

We have planned to start looking at forming these types of strategic relationships in the second-half of this year, and of course we don’t expect you to organise this kind of representation! I’m just putting some ideas out there. I’m not sure who is part of your community and what connections you have. Just what is appropriate and relevant for your event – we are only one part of the hui.

2. We are in need of funding partners to really make Pause, Breathe, Smile successful and for the benefits of this locally-developed, evidence-based and scientifically informed mindfulness programme to reach kiwi kids. At the moment we have a relationship through the Mental Health Foundation of NZ who are supporting us by doing some fundraising for PBS. We have some funding for teacher training scholarships through this partnership from the Rata Foundation, Trust Waikato and the Joyce Fisher Fund. We are dependent on this generosity at this stage to stay afloat. A large-scale funding opportunity (e.g. NEXT Foundation), or several strategic partnerships, would enable us to upscale Pause, Breathe, Smile and make it really affordable and accessible for all New Zealand school students.

3. The other thing we need is marketing help – in terms of expertise and also the cost of marketing.

@sam22os Do you know if Simon Crook is planning to come to the hui? Would he be keen and have energy to help them with their marketing do you reckon?

Simon is thinking about it. Why don't you message him about the opportunity with Pause Breath Smile? I reckon he will be into it. I'll talk to him this Thursday too.

@nick great asks from Tash and Grant - in addition to their asks - and this may be left field - but I wonder whether it would be useful for Tash and Grant to talk to Akina’s investment advisors - they might be able to help them consider the various funding options and develop an investment strategy. The contacts are Emma Geard [email protected] and Dave Allison [email protected]. @sarrah did you identify any funding opportunities through Marama Davidson’s session? We could also see if we could set up a meeting with Marama.

@carolinetaylor I didn't identify any funding opportunities no but what about the Namaste Foundation?

Namaste and Akina would both be great for them to talk to I reckon. Who do we know that might know decision makers in govt?

Suggested Namaste and Akina Foundations to Grant, which he was really grateful for. He came back with a big thank you, and the following:
"What we need more than anything else is a good marketing person – someone to take care of social media and who has the initiative to see critical time points for when things need advertising, when stories need capturing, and who can meet targets of getting people to our trainings etc. Perhaps there is someone in the MFC community who has those skills?

Another more immediately practical way of supporting MEG is for people to purchase our MEG Online Mindfulness resource: https://mindfulnesseducation.nz/meg-online-mindfulness-course/. It is a comprehensive overview and modern expression of the four foundations of mindfulness (in eight guided sessions), complete with accompanying guided meditations. At $79+GST we are hoping that people will purchase this and treat it either as a stand-alone mindfulness course or as a good accompanying resource to whatever other mindfulness work they are undertaking. The more people we have purchasing this, the better our chances are at becoming a sustainable business and being able to support school teachers to complete PBS training. Check out the link – the course is self-paced and available 24/7 and is purchased online."

What's Grant's email? Simon is interested in marketing.
