Google Docs integration

An idea: ditch the context panel and replace it with (optional) Google Docs integration.

It would look a bit like this:

Wow. That would make Google Docs collaboration so much more awesome! But like you say, you'd definitely want to make it optional.

Hmm... love the functionality, don't like the idea of knitting in with Google like that though. I think we don't have a super clear vision of what the context is for, and I'd rather figure that out and design from there.

I think it's main uses are 1) as a first comment and 2) as a summary of the discussion to date and 3) to hold objective information relevant to a discussion/decision. Those are three quite different objectives, maybe there are more. Maybe splitting them out into multiple features is the way to go.

I agree re. context.

I want us to play nicely with people's data — to be porous, not siloed — content flowing smoothly in and out of our platform. I noticed we at Loomio often have one particular google doc or spreadsheet closely tied to a discussion.

I think the way trello organise their power ups is quite good for optional features as is there option for attaching google docs to cards.

I don't have any objections to using google docs for the context but I don't think I would use it personally and would rather see other features prioritized.

I really like the Context Box as it is!

If you are going to create integration with online docs hosted on other sites, would it be possible to use an open protocol/ standard so that people could use with services other than Google Docs?

Chris Taklis

i also really like the context box as it is, ok it is missing the formation buttons.

But do you think is it good with google docs integration? what will happen to loomio context box if some document on google docs is deleted?

PauKokura

I think its a better practice to write a "more information" link in the context. To a google docs or etherpad or whatever, you can make it editable for anyone ho gets the link (so anyone that reads the context gets it) or a blog etc. if you dont want to edit and its public information.
