Where the idea came from

I posted a message on the International Association of Facilitators list and the Art of Hosting list and got a warm response to the idea. Here is the message I posted:
"ust watching a TED Talk on how to save the world from bad meetings, and started to wonder - where are the TED Talks about facilitation, or the TED-X events on how facilitation makes things better? The TED search engine only shows one such event, called Citadel Park, but no video is available.
So I had an idea - what about IAF getting together with the Art of Hosting, Open Space Technology, Appreciative Inquiry, Institute of Cultural Affairs, Applied Improvisational Network, etc, and hosting a TED-X event on how we are all changing the world? Maybe it could even be a kind of virtual, or at least a multi-locale, event.."

Let's brainstorm what is possible, and how we might go about it :)

TEDx Talks relating to facilitation
I did a search for TEDx Talks relating to facilitation, and of the ones that were flagged, these were the only ones that seemed related to facilitation:

1) The Art of Facilitation - Changing the way the world meets
17 November 2011, Hampshire College

2) Michael Wilkinson, Citadel Park, November 2012

It's not really the TED format but I do like the idea of modelling facilitation rather than talking about it. I think one of the problems with facilitation is that people don't "get" it until they've experienced it. Plus the fact that I say that if people come out of an event and/or meeting saying "That was well facilitated" then I've been too obvious. It should almost feel as if the participants did it all themselves (which they did really)

For those not on the IAF group, I'll re-post my comment here: I've attended a few TEDx events and although I have found them amazingly stimulating, they struck me almost as the antithesis of facilitation -- I've long been intrigued that they have caught on so well, given that the design of TED conferences (i.e. talking at people, little engagement or reciprocity; no choice of agenda; originally not very inclusive etc.) flies in the face of most adult education principles. So, puzzling over how to address facilitation within the confines of the TED parameters is very intriguing to me -- I'll look forward to hearing more.

Rebecca, I am just joining this conversation. I mentioned on the Linked in group that maybe it would be good to outreach to the adult ed community as well, as that is one natural "neighbor" to our work as facilitators...

Sally, I agree with the value of not just talking 'about' it, but also "doing" it... offering participants some lived experience of it.

also, I agree that the best facilitation is often "invisible"... and, I think there are some practical downsides to that, with regard to awareness and capacity-building...
