Content

KR Kelly Rogers Public Seen by 18

I think the most important thing we need to be doing is thinking about what content we want inside the edition, and soliciting people to write articles. It often takes longer than initially assumed to get articles written.

We also need to be checking for events that would be relevant to review, to try and get a good culture section going.

Please post ideas below.

I've also created a spreadsheet, so we can keep an eye on what articles are being solicited and work out if we need to look into different areas to keep content diverse.

To be clear, the column titled 'Following up', is in reference to someone keeping track of an article (usually the person who solicits it) in order to make sure it doesn't get forgotten about or lost.

  • I want to design a big infographic with a gendered view of the cuts that have been passed through Birmingham City Council since 2010. It'll be black and white, so won't take up any colour pages.

  • I have asked a friend working at Ana Wim (http://www.anawim.co.uk/) to write an article with her tutee on the services they give, and the need for them in Birmingham.

Other ideas for content that were floated in the meeting (which I can remember):

  • There are two comedy nights with women-only line ups taking place before the article deadline, which can be reviewed:
Wednesday 11th June Laughing Cows Comedy Night featuring Jen Brister and Julie Jepson at the Kitchen Garden Café, Kings Heath.
Wednesday 25th June Shazia Mirza & Barbara Nice Edinburgh Previews at the Memorial Hall, Kings Heath.

  • World Cup: articles discussing sex trafficking/domestic abuse that is expected to take place during the World Cup.

I might be able to write a bit about immigration, detention, including Yarls Wood and Cedars though i can't full on commit at the moment.

In terms of the World Cup article, i know this probably goes without saying among us, but can we make sure that any piece that talks about "sex trafficking" is very explicitly not anti-sex work.

Also, the Kitchen Garden uses, or at least used, workfare and were really big jerks when confronted about it last year. I would be hesitant at best to promote anything they do.

Stuff on child protection privatization could be good, too and maybe a gendered look at the EU?

Oh i actually started writing something on Yarls Wood, i mentioned it to Kelly but forgot to update it here sorry.

I was also thinking of writing something on the Isla Vista killings, focusing on the discourse on mental health in the media (obviously from a feminist perspective).

Thanks @dorter for pointing out the use of workfare. I think it's a good shout to avoid reviewing that gig on that basis.

And yeah, I'm sure we can agree that anti-sex work articles won't be accepted, as that wouldn't meet the basic political standards set out by Slaney St (y).

That'd be really good if you could finish that article @sofiabendaoud. I was wondering if you, or someone you knew would be interested in doing another article relating to the media response to the Isla Vista killings from a race perspective - i.e. that while these shootings could easily come under the banner of terrorism, white terrorists are rarely (never?) branded as such / instead of interrogating the aspects of white US culture that encourage psychopathy, white killers are always dismissed as individual abberations. Elliot Rodger's parents called the police not long before the killings took place, because they saw his online catalogue of videos, but the police decided that there was nothing to investigate after a polite interview. I think it's clear that if he hadn't been white and very wealthy/educated, a vast cache of videos and being reported by his parents would have resulted in further action, to say the least. I think the race perspective definitely warrants an article of its own, if you know someone who would want to take it up? Or anyone else - keeping in mind it would be vastly preferable if it was written by a person of colour.

Also, everyone - here is a link to an event advertising the article deadline - please share it. I'll post up to the website tomorrow. I'm also going to make an event calling for donations to fund the women's edition, if people think that's appropriate?

Bass Festival is coming up and I'm trying to find some women of colour who want to review it and write up about it from a more political angle:

Bass Festival is the only Black music festival in the UK, and it's in Birmingham. A good longer article could combine a review of the festival with a discussion of how important black music has been for Civil Rights activism and Black Feminism. I noticed that there are a huge number of women artists.

If people know of anyone who would be good to write these then please let me/them know asap, esp. if they want us to try and get free tickets.

Attached is a list of events written out more clearly (the website isn't in any logical order).

Sorry i have totally failed at reading anything here.

But yep Kelly if I was to write an article on Isla Vista, I would definitely include that. And the fact that obviously as a white (or white passing as he is mixed race but looks white, has a 'white' name) he won't be branded as a terrorist, but as a mentally ill man. Considering that i'm already writing something on Yarls wood and cedar i'll send a message around to any WoC/non binary POC that i think would be interested.

I think an event calling for donations would be great. I don't know how much time I could personally give to organise it, as i'm going to be pretty busy in the next few weeks, sooorry :s

Kitty and I have just written an article on the Oxford vigil that took place last week calling for the Oxford Union to take rape allegations for seriously. It will be going online but we could put it in the Women's edition as well?

Sounds good, thanks! I'm asking around still for people who would like to write articles about bass festival and the connection between black music and black feminism/ race activism - I don't if anyone can think of anyone who would be up for it?

I'm also going to ask around for an up to date article on the Trojan Horse stuff.
