Handling deployment
Hey guys, I started trying to setup loomio a few months back but doing so on my local machine was more of a technical challenge than I thought it would be.
How easy is it to deploy Loomio nowadays? I'd be really really keen to use it for handling decisions for our Co-lab181 Makerspace as email is just becoming a total barrier to progression of decisions.
Thanks Richard. Will give the revised docs a shot.
@richardfortune why not just use the hosted version for co-lab?
@richardfortune it will probably be easier to deploy it on heroku than on your own computer. =)
you just need a copy of git on your computer.
@alannakrause We'd have access to our own data. We'd be able to process it as we liked. We'd have our own domain, we might potentially skin it? The options are pretty broad - starting out in Loomio.org might make sense. But at some point the ideal would be to self host.
What would the benefits of using the hosted version be?
@richardfortune the benefit would be you could be set up in five minutes :)
@richarddbartlett ha! Speed isn't everything.
@richardfortune, but time is! ;)
@richardfortune also the upkeep and server costs.
Heroku will cost you ~$15/mo starting out. And you'll have to manually update the server yourself whenever you want to get our most recent changes.
PS - I've updated the Set up a production server guide to include information on how to reduce Heroku server costs and increase performance. Read the bottom sections about background jobs and idling.
Our documentation has come a little way since last time you tried. It's still got a long way to go but maybe will be good enough to help you get up and running:

@johnirving and @jonlemmon will be able to provide a lot more techincal support than I can on this. Good luck!
