Work Shop Ideas: Trade, External Relations and Development

I was asked to think of some topics that I could hold a workshop on at our conference and I found some intriguing and quite relevant issues. Some are more academic, others invite a normative discussion. So here we go:

  • Review and Perspectives: The EP's Work on Software as a Dual-Use Item and Digital Arms Control
  • The EU's take on Climate, Labour and Finance in International Fora: Current Strategies and Potential for the Future [This one would inevitably discuss tensions between national policies and the goal to make the EU a truly global player]
  • EU Trade Policy towards so-called LDCs [I did not yet elaborate this issue quite as much]
  • Catherine who? A critical evaluation on the first five years of the EEAS under the Lisbon Treaty [This would include also some debate on the problems of merging at least three traditions of foreign affairs buerocracy]

I hope you like the general idea of these topics. Please do not hesitate to share your honest thoughts.

I think we could try to do a discussion round on the Sofware under arms control, as this is actually a controversial topic among the NGOs that work closely with us (Chaos Computer Club is quite critical of treating software as digital arms, Privacy International is more in favour). So there could be actual controversy! \o/

In terms of a policy talk, I think the Trade Policy one would be most interesting, as the European Parliament is gaining a high profile on this issue, whereas its influence on foreign and especially security policy is still rather limited. So I'd go with topic 1 for a roundtable discussion and 3 for a talk.

Great topic proposals overall!

Wow, those ideas are all absolutely excellent! Which kind of is an issue, since we'll have to choose some :D

I've seen that we went for software under arms control... :) When will decisions be made on the policy discussion slots? And thanks ;)

The software under arms control was more of an idea I had for the PPEU conference inside the parliament on Friday, not sure if they went with it though. For YEEA, since nobody complained, go with EU trade policy toward so-called LDCs!

I think, I will make a combination

I think, I will make a combination of point 2 and 3, but with a strong focus on 3 (LDCs) - 2 would merely give a perspective of what EU trade policy looks like in general

Great! If you could write up an abstract for yeea2014.eu, I can put it up as a teaser!
