Safety for cyclists in the city

MG Myles Green Public Seen by 39

Whangarei has great potential to be a great cycling city. Cycling and in particular commuter cycling has many benefits for all in our community. Those benefits include improved air quality for everyone, improved health for those cycling, community building through spontaneous interaction with people on the streets.

Do you agree?

Reduce the speed limit in the CBD to 30Kmh Closed Mon 29 Sep 2014 8:08PM

A number of other cities around NZ have reduced speed limit in busy inner city area to 30Kmh. Whangarei could follow this by also reducing the speed limit to 30Kmh. This has a number of benefits. The risk of death for cyclists from a car travelling at 30Kmh is around 10%, while the risk of death from a car travelling at 50Kmh is arounds 80%. (http://www.camerassavelives.vic.gov.au/home/road+trauma/speed+and+road+safety/)

Reducing accidents in the CBD will save the city money. Both car to car and car to cyclists cost the city money is lost wages, injuries and other costs.

I really think that this would not only created a better environment for cycling but would make the CBD a better environment for living, walking, hanging out in cafes, shopping and all the things that a vibrant city centre provides.

I suspect that this is the actual speed for vehicles in much of the CBD already so formalising it should not require to much of a change for drivers.

we have discussed this in a package together with a 'no helmet zone' in the 30kmh area. it seems there might be a discussion to be had around whether they are good vehicles for each other in a campaign, or if we focus on the 30kmh then move to helmet

By encouraging the promotion of cycling we will hopefully get some motorists onto bikes who may not have used them before or for sometime. This helps empathy so the experience is seen from the others eyes and once back in a car speed may reduce...

Great Ideal, but having heard Councillors & staff opinions on this issue today; suspect it will unfortunately be a long way down the priority list.

No brainer really. 50k is way to fast in the CBD

Fully agree - at 30kph a car has a 5% chance of killing a pedestrian\cyclist - at 70kph it goes up to 95%....love your neighbor....slow the f$#k down ;-)

Wellingtons 30km/h zone has just failed to pass, Councillors opposed said it was because average speed was only marginally above 30 anyway. We need to be smart about how we promote this. It is a signal to cyclists and pedestrians saying 'it's safe here' and to motorists 'you need to respect other users of this space' it is not just about reducing vehicle speeds through enforcement.
