Safety for cyclists in the city
Whangarei has great potential to be a great cycling city. Cycling and in particular commuter cycling has many benefits for all in our community. Those benefits include improved air quality for everyone, improved health for those cycling, community building through spontaneous interaction with people on the streets.

Reduce the speed limit in the CBD to 30Kmh Closed Mon 29 Sep 2014 8:08PM
A number of other cities around NZ have reduced speed limit in busy inner city area to 30Kmh. Whangarei could follow this by also reducing the speed limit to 30Kmh. This has a number of benefits. The risk of death for cyclists from a car travelling at 30Kmh is around 10%, while the risk of death from a car travelling at 50Kmh is arounds 80%. Reducing accidents in the CBD will save the city money. Both car to car and car to cyclists cost the city money is lost wages, injuries and other costs.
