Loomio

Comms Strategy

Simon Tegg PublicSeen by 42

Now that this group is public by default and the repo is outside of Enspiral, I'd like to get a sense of the Ecosystem comms strategy.

For example, I'm aware that other enspiral-like groups are working on, or already have apps similar to what we have proposed. E.g. Camplight (Bulgaria), CoCoon Pro (Italy), Sensorica (Canada-USA), Swedish group (?).

It seems to be beneficial to the ecosystem as a whole if these apps aligned towards the open-app's standards?

Is it our strategy to promote open-app amongst these groups?
If so, what is our value proposition?

Simon Tegg

An obvious part of the value proposition is that Loomio has lots of name-recognition and good vibes. By aligning with the open-app ecosystem, your apps can integrate with Loomio long-term.

@vitaliy Can you comment here? What do you see as the value proposition of the open-app ecosystem for camplighters?

Simon Tegg

Ben from Loomio is about to head off to speak at the personal democracy forum in NYC. He'll also be meeting with Code for America folks. How should he pitch the open-app ecosytem?

Mikey

draft pitch: instead of competition for profit, society gains more value from developers cooperating to create a common toolbox of small tools that focus on real needs.

Jade Ambrose

I suspect that Ben will understand how to pitch it if we can just brief him on what it is. :)

Josef Davies-Coates

"a suite of of integrated and open sourced apps which support transparent, democratic and decentralised organising" is pretty clear, no?

Sharif

Hi!
nice to be part of this.
I feel that there is no need for value propositions towards like minded communities. We understand the value by heart.

Let´s just integrate!

Simon Tegg

Ok I briefed Ben on what we got here.
Plenty of people ask him about loomio integrations.
Loomio API and plugin architecture this is the next big phase after mobile so won't happen in the next 6 months. Now he can say if you integrate with app ecosystem, you'll get loomio integration in the long-term

Bob Haugen

We're up for integrating, whenever people who are using two software whatevers want to integrate.

We would be instantly interested in a Loomio plugin to handle comments, conversations and decisions. We have used an open source plugin in the past that we heavily modified, and have also considered Disqus which was developed by some people I sorta know, but would much prefer Loomio because I think we share more goals.

We also agree with the comment from @ahdinosaur and are trying to deprecate competition between projects that want to be part of what Tibi of Sensorica calls the Open Value Network Infrastructure suite.

Derek Razo

It seems to be beneficial to the ecosystem as a whole if these apps aligned towards the open-app’s standards?

Agreed! I have been talking to many groups in the early phases of community-oriented software projects, and the response

Is it our strategy to promote open-app amongst these groups? If so, what is our value proposition?

I think making other groups aware of the project, and integrating where possible- and where collaboration seems fluid is a good strategy.

As for value proposition- I think different people will see different aspects of the project as being valuable.

I very much like, "a suite of of integrated and open sourced apps which support transparent, democratic and decentralized organizing" -- I think friends and activists resonate with this very much.

I'm also fond of framing the OAE project in terms of infrastructure. "In the same way we need roads, power grids, etc. Society increasingly needs soft infrastructure to support democratic, open and transparent collaboration between individuals, communities, enterprises, municipalities, and governments." -- A (admittedly high level) prop like this might work well for certain grants, programs, etc.

For businesses / startups in the social enterprise, co-op enterprise space I think the simple idea of, "We are going to make a bunch of small apps that will make your product easier to develop, cheaper to maintenance, and more coherent with other apps in the space" is very compelling (ie. I have had success with it). -- This is especially true if we can carve out collaborations between groups that want similar services and pool resources to feed developers :)

Is this clear / what do you think about these propositions? They are a work in progress :)

Derek Razo

Woops... that last one got messed up.

Should say:::
Agreed! I have been talking to many groups in the early phases of community-oriented software projects, and the response has been very positive.

Joshua Vial

Love your thinking @derekrazo - I'm happy with everything you mentioned and would love to see a 'how to communicate OAE' doc

Alanna Irving

I've been calling it "an operating system for a new kind of company" in business settings.

Vitaliy Angelov Filipov

Hello! :)) Here're my $0.02:
@simontegg the value we're seeking in Camplight is something along the lines of open source software apps that can help us organize better, make decisions faster, foster transparent culture, mitigate risk clever, thrive together & decentralized and be happy using something that works out of the box :) But Camplight intrinsically is motivated to work towards achieving these goals because well... we're a collective and realise the values without any further details. I guess other collectives will be more interested in the features of such app ecosystem. Currently we'll be trying to make a small "launching soon page" for our internal bookkeeping software called Moneyflow. We experiment with different kind of copywrite but we think to highlight the features more.

I think the current value propositions from @derekrazo @alanna @josefdaviescoates are right on spot and it all depends on the context because there're different target segments that the App ecosystem is aiming at. That's why I think that if the value propositions are trying to educate our market to become more open, transparent, flat etc. we should go with more generic stuff. Otherwise the specifics are more meaningful to other organizations such as Enspiral/Camplight (we already know what we seek in terms of value propositions, the deal is that we need the right features in order to integrate)

Josef Davies-Coates

@simontegg could you please remind me who the Swedish group are again? I can't find your initial mention of them (where I think I also first learned about Camplight) and I'd like to get something about them up on http://open.coop (not much there yet but I've got over 50 posts in draft all about relevant and related projects :) )

Simon Tegg

@josefdaviescoates
Citizen Hive. Some of them have been contributing to Loomio I believe.

Without reading into detail, please also don't forget about Poplus.
